Rory Archibald’s ‘Personal Enlightenment’

Spotlight

This year marks my 11th year in the business-events industry. I’ve been lucky enough to have worked in some of Scotland’s most prestigious hotels and venues. I started in a hotel as an event planner, then on to hotel sales roles in a number of Scottish properties, before taking my first association sales job at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre.

It was around this time that I had “my personal enlightenment” – when I knew this industry is for me, for life. I was preparing a bid for an international life sciences association, looking at ways the conference could benefit the community, and the penny dropped. I realised events are critical to everyone. They are the catalyst to new ideas and new ideas have the potential to change the world.

I now lead the Associations & Sectors team at VisitScotland Business Events, and I’m constantly inspired by the people I work with and their willingness to collaborate for the greater good. We’re working together for Scotland. All of our cities and regions are rallying around a single concept: “Scotland. Where ideas become legend.” To me, that is an amazing achievement and I love being involved in it. Every day I work with people who are passionate about Scotland and our industry. An organisation is only as good as its people and I feel I’m surrounded by the best.
