PCMA’s 20 in Their Twenties program honors exceptional young leaders in the business events industry. Class of 2025 member Lucie Sagne, event designer at MCI Group Canada, would like to see initiatives at events that tackle food waste expanded in practice.
If you could transform the industry with the snap of your fingers, what would be the one thing you’d change for good?
It would be eliminating food waste at events. Catering is a significant part of the experience, but too often, leftover food goes to waste. While some charities offer pick-up services after events, I would love to see these systems become more widespread and well-known. This way, unused food can be repurposed or donated to benefit local communities rather than being discarded. Sustainability is increasingly important in events, and tackling food waste is a meaningful step toward making the industry more responsible.
How is AI changing your job?
Leveraging AI is simplifying my job in several ways. It allows me to focus more on the creative, hands-on aspects of event design by streamlining parts of my workflow and handling the most repetitive and time-consuming tasks. Effectively using AI helps us work faster and more efficiently — but it doesn’t replace the personal touch or human intuition. I view AI as a complementary tool, almost like a virtual assistant, that enhances my work.
What do you like most about your job?
I enjoy exploring innovative ways to make traditional corporate events more engaging and fun, whether by finding unique venues, adding unexpected twists to classic concepts, or leveraging technology in smart and cost-effective ways. It’s all about meeting event objectives while keeping things fresh and exciting. Each project is a new chance to think outside the box.
What made you choose the events industry as a career?
I’ve always been passionate about bringing people together. Throughout my studies, I joined various event committees and associations, which eventually led me to pursue a career in the events industry. I love creating concepts, managing the intricate logistics behind every event, and transforming a vision into reality. It’s incredibly rewarding to see creative ideas come to life and to know that my work helps foster connections and create memorable experiences for others.
Do you think work/life balance is a particular challenge within the industry? How do you achieve work/life balance in your position?
Given the fast-paced nature of the events industry, work/life balance is definitely a challenge. With the long hours and remote work format, the line between personal and professional time can easily blur. To manage this, I’ve learned to prioritize self-care and establish boundaries around my time. I schedule breaks, make an effort to unplug after my workday or an event, and engage in other creative activities that help me recharge.
