Get to know PCMA Member Christine A. Cleaver, Assistant Professor of Event Management, NYU School of Professional Studies, Jonathan M. Tisch Center of Hospitality.
What initially led you to becoming involved with PCMA?
I first became involved with PCMA because I was looking for more than a professional association—I was looking for a community that believed in the power of business events to create connection, learning, and meaningful change. As an event management educator and industry professional, I saw PCMA as a bridge between the classroom and the industry. It offered an opportunity to introduce students to the profession, connect emerging professionals with experienced leaders, and remain actively engaged with the trends shaping the future of business events. What began as a desire to grow professionally quickly became a passion for helping others find their place, their people, and their voice within the PCMA community.
How has your career developed as a result of being a PCMA member?
PCMA has played a transformative role in my career. Through chapter leadership, educational programming, conferences, volunteer service, and countless conversations with fellow members, I have grown as an educator, researcher, speaker, and business events professional. PCMA has given me access to current industry knowledge that I can bring directly into my classrooms, helping students connect academic concepts to real-world challenges. Its educational resources, professional development programs, and events have strengthened my understanding of event strategy, experience design, leadership, technology, and the evolving needs of our workforce. Just as importantly, PCMA has provided a platform for me to contribute. I have had opportunities to develop educational programs, present at industry events, mentor students and emerging professionals, serve the Greater Philadelphia Chapter, and collaborate with professionals who are committed to moving our industry forward. The relationships I have formed through PCMA have led to new ideas, research opportunities, classroom partnerships, guest speakers, student experiences, and lifelong friendships. PCMA has not simply supported my career—it has helped me imagine what my career could become
Why would you tell others it’s important to be involved in PCMA?
You can join an association and receive information, or you can become involved in PCMA and become part of something. PCMA creates a space where professionals at every stage of their careers can learn, lead, contribute, and belong. The greatest value comes from raising your hand—joining a committee, attending a chapter event, introducing yourself to someone new, mentoring a student, or sharing an idea. Our industry is built on human connection, and PCMA gives us the opportunity to experience that connection personally. You never know which conversation will lead to your next opportunity, collaboration, friendship, or big idea. My advice is simple: do not just be a member—get involved. The more you invest in the community, the more the community gives back. Every event has the power to change someone’s career, expand their network, or inspire their next big idea. That’s why I believe so strongly in this profession.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Outside of work, I love attending live events and discovering creative experiences that bring people together. I enjoy traveling, trying new gluten-free restaurants, reading, taking Pilates classes, and finding new ways to recharge and stay curious. I also treasure spending time with my daughter, Shaye. Whether we are attending a concert, exploring a new place, or simply catching up over a great meal, those moments are some of my favorites.
