How China’s New Bridge Will Boost Business Events

The debut of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao (HKZM) Bridge, which opened 24 Oct. after nine years of construction, is a major bonus for business in Hong Kong. The world’s longest sea-crossing bridge — spanning 55 kilometres across the Pearl River estuary — is not only placing Hong Kong in a prime position as China’s southernmost gateway, it’s also drawing global attention to the city.

According to Dawn Page, director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board for the U.K. and Northern Europe: “The opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge solidifies Hong Kong’s position as a transportation hub within Asia.”

As a way to draw high-end international business travellers and promote Hong Kong and Zhuhai as a regional hub for business events, AsiaWorld-Expo (AWE), in partnership with three MICE partners, has formed the new “Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridgehead EXPO Tourism Belt” alliance. The alliance will foster the development of the Greater Bay Area’s MICE market, in addition to offering organisers opportunities at a wide variety of venues within a one-hour radius.

The HKZM, which measures 20 times the length of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, reduced land transport time between Hong Kong and Macao from three hours down to 30 minutes. The landmark project was designed to improve interconnectivity within the Greater Bay Area, which China reportedly one day wants to mirror the San Francisco Bay area.

HKZM will help Zhuhai, the leading city in Guangdong in terms of gross domestic product growth, create an economic zone and facilitate its plans of technological and industrial cooperation with Hong Kong and Macao. The Zhuhai Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone is already home to more than 7,000 high-tech firms according to The People’s Government of Zhuhai Municipality.
