Commonwealth Games in an Uncommon Location

Have You Heard?

One of the world’s largest events — Commonwealth Games 2018 — is taking place right now, and for the first time it’s in a location known primarily for leisure tourism, Australia’s Gold Coast. This globally significant event brings together athletes from 52 countries, including European representatives, the United Kingdom, Malta, and Cyprus. Brisbane, Cairns, and Townsville will host 6,600 athletes and 1.5 million ticket holders in a sporting spectacle that features some of the best sportspeople in the world (think Bolt) running, swimming, lifting, and jumping their way to glory. It is the largest sporting festival to take place on Australian soil since the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

The venues have been chosen carefully, with more than 80% having already been built, adhering to the (relatively) low-cost nature of hosting the games. The venues include new film studios built with the future in mind but converted to host table tennis and squash matches this month. Unsurprisingly, the major sporting venues dotting up and down this coast are playing a full part in hosting this sporting extravaganza.
