Members of PCMA’s 20 in Their Twenties class of 2020 already have proven to be leaders, putting their own mark on the business events industry. Derica Clarke, headquarters meetings & online education specialist at the American Colleges of Nurse-Midwives in Washington, D.C., shares her thoughts about the industry.

What do you like most about the industry?

What I like most about the industry is that the opportunities are endless for creativity and growth. Living in a world where everything is an idea or possibility, events can be a brilliant form of expression. Creating the platform to connect participants from different parts of the world in an environment of community is beautiful. There aren’t many industries that endorse character more than ours.

Whats the best advice youve gotten from someone in the industry?

The best advice I’ve received from someone in the industry is to invest in relationships that enrich your life. Enthusiasm and personality are so important — they successfully help you develop strong relationships with quality partners. By networking and communicating career goals effectively, you will develop strong mentor/mentee relationships.

Whats one — or more — event trends you have your eye on?

Event trends I have had my eye on are indoor gardens, living walls, and green spaces. In our industry everyone adores the beauty of nature but not how unpredictable the weather can be. Incorporating outdoor experiences inside gives a new spin on open meeting spaces.
