Jack Johnson, a longtime leader in meetings industry advocacy, helped reshape how destination organizations communicate their value to policymakers and the communities they serve. Through his work at Destinations International (DI) and earlier roles in Chicago government and tourism, Johnson became an influential voice for the industry. He died Oct. 28.

Johnson spent more than a decade leading global advocacy efforts for DI, championing the importance of destination organizations as economic engines and community partners, and helping the industry make its case beyond tourism’s traditional measures of visitor spending and hotel room nights.

In a letter to members announcing Johnson’s passing, DI President and CEO Don Welsh called Johnson a “visionary thought leader” and praised his forward-thinking leadership, deep policy knowledge, and trusted relationships across the destination community.

His approach to advocacy was grounded in firsthand experience. Johnson held positions in Chicago city government and Illinois state government before joining the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority as chief of external affairs. He subsequently helped establish Choose Chicago, the city’s destination marketing organization, where his work helped align the interests of the meetings industry, elected officials, and the broader business community around Chicago’s competitiveness as a destination.

Johnson joined DI in 2016 as chief advocacy officer and retired in late 2025. During his tenure, he advanced the argument that destination organizations deliver value well beyond attracting visitors. He encouraged industry leaders to demonstrate how meetings, conventions, and tourism contribute to economic opportunity and community well-being. Johnson was instrumental in the development and rollout of DI’s DestinationNEXT program, a framework to help destination marketing organizations evaluate their current positioning and map out future strategies.

His advocacy earned national industry recognition. Successful Meetings named Johnson one of its 25 Most Influential People in the Meetings Industry in 2018, citing his work to counter travel boycotts and bans. In 2021, he received a Catalyst Award from Smart Meetings for efforts to communicate the impact of travel restrictions on the live-events sector.

In its letter to members, DI said Johnson’s legacy and contributions would endure for decades. A celebration of his life and legacy is expected to take place in San Antonio in mid-November, with details to be announced.
