Speaker: Dr. Robin Patel
Dr. Robin Patel graduated from Princeton University with a BA in Chemistry and from McGill University in Montreal, Canada with an MD. She then moved to Rochester, Minnesota, where she completed a residency in Internal Medicine and fellowships in Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology at the Mayo Clinic. Upon completion of post-graduate training, she joined the staff of the Mayo Clinic, where she is currently Professor of Medicine and Professor of Microbiology, the Elizabeth P. and Robert E. Allen Professor of Individualized Medicine, Chair of the Division of Clinical Microbiology, Director of the Infectious Diseases Research Laboratory, and Co-Director of the Clinical Bacteriology Laboratory. Doctor Patel is board certified in Infectious Diseases (American Board of Internal Medicine), Medical Microbiology/Public Health Microbiology (American Board of Medical Microbiology), and Clinical Pathology/Medical Microbiology (American Board of Pathology).

Doctor Patel’s research, which is supported by the National Institutes of Health, focuses on bacterial resistance, development and utilization of diagnostic tests, and biofilms. She has published over 400 peer reviewed manuscripts and delivered numerous national and international presentations (e.g., in October 2019, she delivered the Maxwell Finland Lecture at IDWeek in Washington, D.C.). She is the President of the American Society for Microbiology, a Fellow of American Academy of Microbiology, a member of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Council, an advisor to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) Subcommittee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing, a member of the American Board of Pathology Medical Microbiology and Clinical Pathology for ABPath CertLinkTM Test Development and Advisory Committees, a member of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) Decennial Program Committee, Director of the Laboratory Center for the Antibacterial Resistance Leadership Group (ARLG) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), an associate editor for the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, and course director for the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine microbiology course.

She is a past chair of the United States Medical Licensing Examination Microbiology and Immunology Test Material Development Committee (and a current member of a United States Medical Licensing Examination Item Review Group), a past co-chair of the ASM Microbe Program Planning Committee, and has served on numerous NIH study sections.
