Controlling Your Narrative: Crisis Communications for Unpredictable Situations

We learn how to deal with one crisis, and then before you know it, another is on the horizon. In this session, we’ll discuss the current and possible situations we see ourselves in and how to communicate with your audience early, honestly, and effectively.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify how the current situations affecting our society and economies impact media opportunities and communication plans.
  • Illustrate why communicating with your audience in a timely manner will keep you on the right side of industry media.
  • Demonstrate an efficient way to gather facts and deliver messages with transparency, as situations change day by day.

Brought to you by:

Speaker: Randall Samborn
Randall A. Samborn is a non-traditional lawyer who provides strategic communications consulting to clients, most often helping them navigate reputational issues where law, media, and government intersect. Over four decades, Randy’s experience includes being an award-winning legal affairs journalist, a state court prosecutor, a senior executive at a crisis communications agency, and 20 years as an Assistant United States Attorney and the press spokesman at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago under five U.S. Attorneys.

In 2018, Randy established Randall A. Samborn & Associates LLC, to provide personal service to clients and help guide their communications strategies outside of court where reputation matters most. His experience, integrity, and judgment, coupled with his own stellar reputation in newsrooms, not only in Chicago, benefits clients facing media scrutiny and significant reputational risks involving civil and criminal litigation, government investigations, and enterprise challenges.

Building on decades of experience with U.S. Justice Department investigations and prosecutions, Randy has provided communications counseling to corporations, organizations, law firms, and individuals embroiled in complex litigation and regulatory matters involving higher education, energy, environmental, financial, gaming, and property development challenges, among others.

During his government tenure, Randy served as the Justice Department’s national spokesman in two Special Counsel matters involving leaks of classified information, including the 2003-07 investigation of the leak of a CIA’s officer’s identity and the related prosecution in Washington, D.C., of a senior White House official. He has been quoted in the Chicago media, Law360.com, Politico, the Washington Times, the Daily Mail, and Talking Points Memo, among others, on various topics, including Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 Presidential election.

Earlier in his career, Randy wrote many, many hundreds of bylined articles as Chicago Bureau Chief of The National Law Journal and as a reporter for The Blade in his hometown of Toledo, Ohio, as well as thousands of press releases at the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Randy is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Toledo College of Law.
