The PCMA Education Foundation: Fueling Tomorrow's Hospitality Stars
When Allison Anthony applied for the PCMA Education Foundation's Roy B. Evans Scholarship, she was a typical junior at the Penn State School of Hospitality Management: working hard and stressing over what waited after senior year. With a part-time job to lessen the potential load of post-graduation debt, Allison had few opportunities to develop real-world hospitality skills outside the classroom.
The $5,000 Foundation scholarship and an additional alumni-sponsored scholarship changed her life. With the unexpected funding, Allison turned her focus solely to her studies. From participating in a spring break class in Italy focusing on local hospitality venues and cultural differences to attending the 2010 Convening Leaders in Dallas, she made the most of her scholarship dollars.
After graduation, Allison continues to express her appreciate for the Foundation’s support.
“I have a little debt from my last two years of college, my eyes are wide-open to cultural differences – which is of particular importance in the DC market, and I have a complete appreciation for meeting planning customer’s challenges from attending Convening Leaders," Allison says. "Without PCMA and the Education Foundation, I’d most likely be struggling with loans today and certainly wouldn’t be as well prepared to support my customers.”
A Proud PCMA Supporter
Today, Allison is pushing the profession forward as a sales manager at the Hyatt Regency Washington. The new role gives her plenty of responsibilities, and she credits PCMA for helping to prepare her for the fast-paced hospitality world. Allison encourages today's students to get involved in their local PCMA student chapters.
“You need to get yourself out there, learn about the real challenges of this industry and participate in as many events as you can," she advises. "This experience helps you build your resume and tell a compelling story when interviewing.”
