Respondents to PCMA Convene’s 22nd Annual Meetings Market Survey experienced growth in key areas in 2012 and expect continued improvement this year
CHICAGO, IL, March 12, 2013 - This month, PCMA Convene magazine published the results of its annual Meetings Market Survey, an industry-research mainstay for the past 22 years. While the questions have evolved over the past two decades to reflect the current realities of planning meetings and conventions — use of social-media tools and hybrid events, for example — the survey continues to benchmark the fundamental indicators of the industry’s health.
Chief among those critical signs are attendance and exhibitors. The 462 association, independent, and corporate planners who responded in late 2012 to this survey said that attendance at their largest 2012 meeting grew by nearly 4 percent, and they expect an additional 2-percent growth at their 2013 annual meeting. The number of exhibitors at their largest 2012 convention rose by 2.5 percent; they anticipate nearly the same increase in 2013 over 2012. And in terms of the economic value of their largest 2012 event, meeting professional respondents estimated host destinations benefited by $3.8 million on average, compared to $3.4 million in 2011.
“Things are definitely looking up,” said Convene Editor in Chief Michelle Russell, who has analyzed the results of the annual Meetings Market Survey for the past 10 years. “But the picture isn’t entirely rosy. During the recession, planners had to do more with less, and that expectation remains. For example, 71 percent of respondents said they had been asked to cut F&B costs and more than a third were asked to cut audiovisual expenses from their 2013 meetings. And planners whose meetings attract government-employee attendees said they are particularly concerned about their ability to attend — and therefore the success of their events — this year.”
