Student, Event Management Certificate

Age: 27

Where did you grow up/where are you from: Hoffman Estates, Illinois

Interesting fact about yourself: I make functional steel armor in my free time.

University/Career Program: I have an M.S. in Physics, but right now I'm working on a certificate program in Event Management from my local community college.

What aspects of the convention industry are you most passionate about: I have been a volunteer at a number of fan run pop culture conventions for the past three years. I love working to produce an event where people can come together to enjoy their hobbies with like minded individuals without fear of judgment from others who don't share their passions.

What type of job would you like to pursue after graduation: I would like to be a practicing scientist and engineer, but I'm also in the process starting a convention management company with a good friend of mine to start a video game convention and expo in the Chicagoland area. I have a number of interests professionally and privately, and I don't see any reason not to pursue them all!

If you could have dinner with anyone living or dead, who would it be: Dr. Brian May, best known as the lead guitarist and songwriter for Queen, but also an accomplished astrophysicist. He is someone who did not compromise on any of his passions and was successful in two seemingly disparate fields often finding creative ways to combine them, like building his own electric guitar. I'd like to follow in his footsteps when in comes to event management and physics.

What made you become a member of PCMA? How many years have you been a member of PCMA: I became a member of PCMA at the recommendation of my instructor, Michele Wierzgac. Unfortunately, a number of fan produced conventions are run by groups that while passionate, have no formal background or experience in event management. I want to learn the industry best practices and resources to build a solid foundation for my own convention and to bring that expertise to other events I volunteer with. I actually just joined PCMA in March of this year, but I look forward to growing my knowledge base by taking advantage of PCMA's educational programs and though speaking with the number of experienced professionals now in my network!
