The student club at Grand Valley State University located in Grand Rapids, MI had the once in a life time opportunity to work the 2016 NCAA Men’s Final Four in Houston, TX. Twenty-six students piled into five minivans and made the nineteen hour drive from Michigan to Texas to work “the best Final Four game in history.”
For open practices, we worked as ushers throughout the whole stadium, but for the semi-finals and final game all twenty-six students held a position in the student and media sections on the floor. We were able to problem solve, collaborate as a team with the other CSC employees and experience a game with over 75,000 attendees.
All of this became possible through a partnership with Contemporary Services Corporation (CSC). They are a large event security company, and through this relationship they allow our students to work events where they are providing services. So far, the student club at GVSU has been able to work three NCAA Men’s Final Four tournaments and will be working the 2017 Super Bowl!!
These experiences give students the hands-on opportunities that the classroom does not offer, exposing them to real life events, adding to their in class education experience and definitely preparing them for the job world while giving them a leg up on the competition.
Seeking outside classroom experiences is key to successfully transitioning from student to real world. PCMA has numerous opportunities available at http://www.pcma.org/careers.
