Meeting professionals have plenty of factors to consider when comparing potential host destinations, but there’s one big question at the top of their lists: is getting there easy and affordable for attendees? According to research from STR, Inc., 83 percent of meeting professionals rank convenient airline service as “very important” in the site selection process. Destinations across North America are aiming to look more attractive to airlines and their frequent fliers. One of the most ambitious projects is in Calgary where officials are currently wrapping up work on the biggest expansion program in the history of Calgary International Airport (YYC).
“The airport plans are very exciting for the entire convention community in Calgary,” Heather Lundy, Acting General Manager, Calgary TELUS Convention Centre, says. “We’ve been seeing an increase in the number of attendees outside Canada over the past few years, and the expansion is poised to help those numbers continue to grow.”

The $2 billion project includes a new international terminal that will more than double the size of the airport with 24 new gates for international and US destinations. Construction is almost finished, and officials are preparing for the grand opening in October. To gear up for the big day, YYC is inviting 2,500 volunteers to come to the airport to participate in exercises to test baggage handling procedures, check-in kiosks and terminal way finding systems.
“The new airport will feature a range of new service solutions designed to enhance the entire passenger experience,” Lundy says. “When attendees travel to and from conferences, the airport here will help make the experience more efficient and cost-effective. As the projects nears completion, Calgarians are thrilled to welcome more of the world to our city.”
