Thank you to everyone who participated in the PCMA Community Service event at the Atlanta Women and Children’s Day Center on May 18th, and thank you to Cobb Travel & Tourism for sponsoring this program. We had the largest turnout ever for this event and we could not have done it without all of your support.
We will be hosting another lunch in the fall, and look forward to everyone’s participation then as well, more details to follow.
Please remember that we continue to collect supplies for the shelter throughout the year. Any unused hotel amenities, baby items, school supplies, and clothing are always needed and appreciated. You may bring them to any PCMA function or contact the board if you would like to donate at any time.
Started in 1986, the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children has a mission of trying to ease the burden of homelessness for women and children and to assist in establishing self-sufficiency by providing comprehensive education and supportive services in a manner that respects human dignity. They provide two meals a day to all guests, provide food pantry kits to guests, and supply vital hygiene and childcare supplies. In addition, job counselors were able to assist guests with resumes and interview preparation, as well as distribute MARTA passes for safe travel to and from interviews.
At our August meeting, we plan to also participate in the Snax Sax Program.
Snax Sax Program:
This program began in 2008 at Embry Hills United Methodist Church.
They pack weekend snack bags for 285 or so students at 5 Dekalb County Elementary schools--Henderson Mill, Pleasantdale, Evansdale, Livsey and McClendon.
The bags are packed each Wednesday at the church and are delivered on Thursday morning by volunteers.
How you can participate:
- Donate items that we use to pack the bags-100% Fruit Juice Boxes, Unsweetened applesauce, Hunt's Snack Pack Pudding, Lance Peanut Butter Crackers, Granola Bars, Donations of Fresh Fruit or Pop Top Cans of Chef Boyardee Meals.
- Decorate bag with stickers and markers
We will have table with bags, markers stickers, etc at the August meeting to help kick off back to school for this program by decorating bags prior to the meeting, or perhaps placing bags at each seat and having them decorated during the program? You'll have to come to the program on August 3 to find out! Registration will open soon.
