Greetings from your PCMA Heartland 2016 President! We are coming upon what is going to be a very busy Summer for our Chapter. Our committees and Board have been hard at work preparing for our numerous upcoming events.
This Spring alone, we saw a group of four of our Chapter leaders participate in a panel on the campus of Iowa State University for the Events Management Club. This program was designed for the students to inquire about career paths, PCMA membership, and find out about other pertinent topics within the Hospitality Industry as these students enter the real world. I couldn’t be more proud of the group that represented PCMA Heartland which consisted of Caitlin Arnold (Kellen Company), Vicki Comegys (Catch Des Moines), Jacky Liston (PCMA Headquarters) in addition to myself. I thank them for the effort put into making this day a success for the ISU students.
Our Program committee continued its strong 2016 programming with the annual May program. This year’s session was titled: The Happy Hour Effect: 5 Key Commitments to Work/Life Success. The event touched upon elements of time management, goal setting, and overcoming distractions, all areas we can strive to learn to become better leaders within our volunteer roles, our work jobs, and even be better family members. We were proud to welcome the PCMA Foundation to the event as well, to speak on what the Foundation does for our Chapter.
The first annual Global Meetings Industry Day took place in April, and although PCMA didn’t officially sponsor the Kansas City Destination Celebration, our Chapter was well represented and extremely instrumental in supporting the GMID cause through outreach, marketing, and by attending the event. This is an event that will continue to grow in Kansas City and I look for PCMA Heartland to lead a joint effort in our region for next year.
As summer came upon us, two very important events happening in our Chapter region also were upon us. On June 26-29 the PCMA National Education Conference took place in St. Louis. Since one of our focuses this year is to give back to our own membership, PCMA Heartland was able to provide two scholarships for members of our Chapter to attend! Since this prestigious conference took place in our region, we anticipated a larger contingent from our Heartland Membership, and boy did we deliver! Over 30 chapter members attended this conference from our six-state Heartland Chapter region.
Additionally our very own Chapter and outstanding group of Past Presidents will be will be hosting its own Education Conference, called E3 to be held in Lake of the Ozarks at Lodge of the Four Seasons. The 2.5 day conference and will take place on July 21-23.
It is an exciting time to be active in our organization, and I have been impressed with the amount of passion and leadership that lies within our own membership. Being able to speak with our future leaders on a regular basis through our committee meetings, weekly conference calls, and our Board Meetings has inspired me to work hard and with a large amount of pride.
It’s only been a few months since our Board took over for 2016, and we look forward to what the next six months will bring. There is no shortage of effort, that is for sure. To our fellow PCMA Heartland volunteer members, keep spreading the good word about our industry and help share in the passion we all possess.
