PCMA SE Member Spotlight - April 2016

Chris Colbert

Q&A with Dusty Schleier, CMP
Director of Meetings & Conventions
Barbershop Harmony Society

How many years have you been in the hospitality industry?  15 Years

How long have you been a PCMA member?  8 Years

What is your current job title; name of your organization and how long have you been in this position?   I am the Director of Meetings & Conventions with the  Barbershop Harmony Society and have been in this role for 8 years.

What is your goal or objective for being a member of PCMA SE?  Networking with my peers and the education and industry information I receive.

Share a secret: What is one thing that you do in your personal or professional life that you feel adds value to your well-being?  Singing. It has such a calming and energizing effect on people. Singing has been proven to reduce stress and alleviate anxiety.

When was the last time you wrote a letter to someone on paper (holiday & birthday cards don’t count)?   Last month!  Many of our members are of the "seasoned" variety, and still rely on pen and paper for communication.

How do you research potential meeting venues/destinations and what is a major influencer in making your final decision?  I generally work through CVBs to find the right fit for our events.  As an association of amateur musicians, hotel pricing drives a lot of our decisions.

You are a Meeting Professional as an adult. As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?   An astronaut. I was sure that I was going to be the first person to land on Mars.

PCMA provides many opportunities for education, networking and volunteering; which of these has had the most benefit for you?  Networking.  I have been able to share and learn from some of the best in our industry.

Do you believe in ghosts?   I don't... but am still terrified of haunted houses for some reason.
