Student Outreach Events

Molly Witges, Chair - Student Membership Committee
GMC Student DaysThis past fall, students from all around the greater Midwest attended the GMC PCMA Chapter’s Student Day in Chicago. The event was a success, with students gaining valuable networking experience and learning more about the industry from the professionals in the field.

But the attendance of the Student Day was limited by the practical challenges of student life. Busy class schedules, cost, and other factors meant that not every student who wanted to attend the event could actually make the trip to Chicago. The answer was to bring the event to them.

Starting this year, the members of the Student Membership Committee, along with hospitality industry professionals, will be holding regional student days in Indiana and Michigan in addition to an added spring event in Chicago.

Purdue University will host the Indiana Student Day on April 8, with attendance expected from both Purdue and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (UIPUI) and including professionals from the Chicago and Indianapolis areas.

A week later, on April 15, the Michigan Student Day will be held in Grand Rapids, Michigan. We expect to see attendance from Ferris State, Grand Valley State, and Michigan State hospitality students, as well as students and professionals from the Chicago and Michigan areas.

Finally, the GMC Student Membership Committee will be hosting a student day at Kendall College in Chicago on April 29 in Chicago. The event is being promoted to all Chicago-based hospitality schools.

Each of these half-day programs will focus on fostering student awareness of different opportunities in the hospitality industry available to students and will include event planning case study exercises and real-life, practical advice from industry professionals on how students can navigate into and through the industry. Each event culminates with a networking reception where students and professionals meet and connect.

These programs have been a great way to promote the benefits of PCMA membership and welcome students into the hospitality industry. It also has proved as an outlet for seasoned professionals to help mentor our industry’s future leaders.
