Helping and Volunteering with the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children

Leighton Williams, CEM

There are over 7,000 homeless people in Atlanta, 2,000 of which do not have nightly shelter and of those, 1,300 are families with children.  The numbers continue to rise.  We are fortunate to be part of a vibrant and growing hospitality industry in Atlanta, bringing people to our city and helping them to connect and make experiences.  We are also fortunate to be able to give back to our hometown as well.  Simple things we can all collect and share with the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children can make the difference between self-worth and forgotten.  The Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children helps homeless women and children by providing basic necessities we all take for granted such as shoes, clothing, and hygiene products, along with counseling, career education, and hot meals.  The following items are ongoing needs for the shelter:

  • Small (8oz or smaller) hand sanitizer
  • Travel size toiletries
  • Air Freshener (plug in or spray)
  • Sweat Pants in all sizes
  • Comfortable / Athletic Type Shoes
  • Pens
  • Watches (inexpensive)
  • Day Planners or Small Calendars

The Southeastern Chapter of PCMA has supported the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children for several years with donations of items collected at each of our meetings, with our time in serving meals, and with financial support which allows the mission to carry out their work.  We are currently planning out the activities for 2016.  We plan to continue collecting donated items and appreciate all of your support.  There will be a couple of opportunities to get involved in preparing and serving meals, and possibly a day or two of sorting donated items that the shelter uses and that help fund the shelter through sales at the Mission’s Thrift Store located on Marietta Street.

Since we are in the event business, we are also considering the possibility of planning an “event-ful” day for the shelter as well.  Finally, PCMA SE has been blessed by corporate donations, which have helped to continue our support of the shelter’s work.  If you  or your company would be able to help financially support the shelter, please contact the Board of Directors.   There are so many exciting opportunities, ways we can all give back a little and truly impact and change lives.

If you have a passion for helping others, we would love to have you join the Community Service Committee, please contact Lee Williams at Leighton.williams@freemanco.com.
