Every two years, the Greater Midwest Chapter of PCMA selects a new charity to be the primary recipient of the chapter's community service activities and fund raising. The Community Service Committee has an extensive review process of potential organizations that provide support and services for various groups in need.
The Community Service Committee is pleased to announce the new 2016-2017 Charity Partner is Inspiration Corporation. Located in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago, Inspiration Corporation helps 2,500 individuals a year who are affected by homelessness and poverty to improve their lives and increase self-sufficiency.
Founded as Inspiration Café in 1989 by former police officer, Lisa Nigro, the Café provided a dignified space for homeless men and women to order food off a menu and be served free meals in a restaurant setting. The Café has since grown to become Inspiration Corporation, which provides not only the restaurant for homeless but also case management, supportive services, housing and a food skills training program called Inspiration Kitchens.
Inspiration Kitchens are social enterprise kitchens located in Uptown and Garfield Park which are open to the public and serve brunch, lunch and dinner. The restaurants are staffed by participants and graduates of a 13-week job training program that gives individuals skills in the food service industry.
As a chapter, we will have many opportunities to support Inspiration Corporation with our time, resources and financial donations. Chapter volunteering may include preparing/serving meals at the café, conducting mock interviews, tutoring and assisting with fundraisers or other events.
Be sure to watch the chapter newsletter and our social media for more details as volunteer and donation opportunities become available.
