Attention, medical meeting planners, here's some great news: there's a new credential that will distinguish your expertise. Now, for the even better news: if you qualify for the examination process, you can take the beta test for free.
It's the new CMP-HC exam, and the Convention Industry Council has been working on it since 2011. As the laws surrounding the healthcare industry have evolved, Gayle Dahlman, Certification Director, CIC, says that it became clear that an additional designation was essential to the industry.

"Many of the professionals we spoke to already held the CMP designation, and they told us that passing the CMP is not enough when it comes to managing healthcare-related meetings," Dahlman says.
A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Developing the CMP-HC Designation
To answer the call for a new a designation, the CIC recruited more than 40 subject matter experts to develop the standards, write the exam items and review all of the material. The group includes a wide range of leaders from around the industry.
"Everyone involved in the process was chosen to ensure that the exam was a reflection of the entire industry," Dahlman says. "We had contributors from associations and corporations, planners and suppliers, the education sector and the hospital sector and more."

Because medical meetings continue to pop up in new markets, Dahlman says that CIC knew they needed subject matter experts from all over the world. The development panels included contributors from the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Europe.
Why You Need It
It's no secret that medical meetings have changed dramatically in recent years. As planners and suppliers adjust to the Sunshine Act and medical professionals feel the impact of the Affordable Care Act, education is more essential than ever before.
"There are so many different aspects to managing a healthcare-related meeting, and those aspects vary from country to country," Dahlman says. "On top of that, the regulations change, too. It's crucial that medical meeting planners stay abreast of those changes to ensure that their organizations aren't liable."
