More than 400 participants from across the hospitality community volunteered their time to HUG Chicago 2013 on May 23. The event kicked off at Navy Pier’s Festival Hall, before the volunteers headed to 13 different clean-up, beautification and community service projects across the city.
Lori Adlesick, Director, Special Events for Choose Chicago, which planned and coordinated the event, said, “We were thrilled with the response we received from our hospitality community once again. Additionally, we were pleased to be able to extend the reach of HUG by sending extra items (t-shirts, hats, water bottles and gloves) to the people of Oklahoma to assist in the clean-up efforts from their recent devastation.”
Yard work, picking up trash, sorting and distributing clothing, helping with computer work and resume building, sanitizing and organizing children’s toys, and working with kids were among the HUG projects. Just as the projects varied, so did the organizations that benefited from the volunteers’ efforts: Care for Real, Chicago Park District, Cornerstone Community Outreach, H.O.M.E. - Housing Opportunities and Maintenance for the Elderly, Navy Pier, Salvation Army, Sarah’s Circle, Shedd Aquarium, and YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago.
