According to the recently released CareerCast Top 200 Jobs of 2013, meeting and event professionals might want to consider switching careers. Both of the aforementioned positions ranked above “event coordinator” on the list, which clocked in at number 62.
How are the rankings calculated? The CareerCast methodology is based on four key categories: environment, income, outlook and stress. A combination of a competitive work environment and on-the-job stress seems to play a key role in pushing event planning out of the top tier.

Transforming the Job Title
The CareerCast rankings hold some interesting insights into how careers stack up against each other, but the company’s view of on-site execution may not fall in line with the evolving role that a planner plays in the big picture.
While being involved in meetings and events can be stressful, it’s fair to say that the title of ‘event coordinator’ doesn’t truly describe what many of today’s meeting and event planners do. Planning a meeting isn’t simply checking off a to-do list and handling the logistics. PCMA members play crucial roles to help their organizations achieve their annual objectives.

Regardless of where your job ranks compared with other fields, the report cites a statistic that puts all those minutes, hours and days at work into perspective: the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the average employee spends more than two-thirds of the day at work or on work-related activities.
