We are kicking off 2016 with the information YOU need to know to be on top of event industry trends in the coming year. Event industry experts will present their predictions for the new year, including everything from fashion to décor to food and beverage innovations that you’ll be seeing on banquet menus all year long. Don't miss out on learning the Pantone Color of the Year for 2016! This always popular trends overview will set you up to look smart and be ahead of the trends curve in the upcoming year.


This education session is immediately preceded by a Career Exploration Panel, “Real Life Advice about jobs in the Hospitality Industry.” Come and learn the skills you need to succeed, and how event professionals got their start in the industry. This panel is specifically designed for students and emerging professionals with less than 3 years of experience. The career panel takes place from 4-5 PM and registrants may stay for the What’s Hot, What’s Not education session following. 


Learner Outcomes: What’s Hot, What’s Not

Attendees will be able to take back what they have learned in this presentation and apply it to their own meetings and events, putting them ahead of the curve for 2016 and sparking creativity to be a leader in the year to come.  Some of the topics and trend takeaways will apply to the following aspects of events and meetings:

  • Food and Beverage trends for exciting eating
  • Updates on décor for the new year. If planners are looking for ways to spice up the look of their meeting or event, décor trends will help you do it!
  • Announcement of Pantone’s color of the year for 2016 and ways to use to elegantly and creatively in your meetings and events

About our Presenters

Andrew Zill, Design Director at Feats, Inc.

Andrew brings a talent for choosing unique decor elements when creating detailed thematic environments for private, celebrity and corporate clients. As a senior event designer for Feats, Andrew creates and manages event decor, stage and set designs and element fabrication for national clients including Harpo Productions/O Magazine, Procter & Gamble/Cover Girl, the Miss USA Pageant, Johns Hopkins Institutions and U.S. Foodservice. Andrew also served as an on-camera designer for HGTV's Curb Appeal and Kid's Space home improvement shows and is the recipient of six prestigious ADDY Awards recognizing creative excellence. His unique designs have been featured in Baltimore Bride, Baltimore Magazine and Style Magazine, as well as in DreamWorks' motion picture, Head of State.


Petra Compel, Director of Events at The Grand (Historic Venue)

Recognized as a hospitality industry sales leader, Petra Compel is a "networking maven" with more than 20 years of experience developing new and increasing established markets in events, hotels and travel. Petra is the Director of Events for The Grand, a historic event venue in Baltimore, MD.

Petra is also a featured annual speaker at regional & national industry conferences including Event Solutions/CaterSource, PCMA, NACE, and Marriott Catering conferences. Topics include "Trends in Food/Beverage and Event Design" , "Networking for Business" , and "Impact of Color in Events" . She also presents "Event Planning 101" as a guest speaker at Loyola University, Notre Dame, Towson University, and Howard Community College.

 he's been awarded the Marriott Hotel's "Chairman's Circle Award" in for exceeding sales goals by over 200% and received the Baltimore Academy of Hospitality, Travel and Tourism's "Transportation Professional of the Year" award from her industry peers. She has been active in HSMAI, MPI, ACTE and NBTA on a national level and is the past president of the Maryland Chapter of HSMAI, and the Baltimore-Washington Business Travel Association (BWBTA).
