Leading Meeting Professionals

Professional Convention Management Association

by PCMA | Apr 18, 2012

NEW YORK CITY, New York, April 19, 2012 - The new look for Convene, the award-winning magazine of the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA), was unveiled today at SPRINGtacular, a special reception in New York City hosted by staff from PCMA and Convene.  The magazine's May issue - available in mid-May - will be the first to feature the redesign.

"Even though we've continued to receive high marks from readers and experts in the publications industry, we wanted to continue to raise the bar," said Convene Editor in Chief Michelle Russell.  "Our new design will be more streamlined, easier to read, and more sophisticated - less like a traditional trade publication and more like the consumer magazines many of our readers enjoy."

That approach matches the magazine's content, which has expanded in recent years to include many general interest business topics that affect meeting professionals and the meetings industry.

"The meetings industry doesn't exist in a vacuum," said Deborah Sexton, PCMA President and CEO.  "It's important that Convene's content - and now its look and feel - is better aligned with the greater business community of which we are an important part."

The new look and feel is designed to make it easier for busy professionals to read - and engage in - the magazine's content.  The format also translates better for the increasing number of people reading the magazine online via Convene's new mobile and tablet apps or on full-size computer screens.

Readers will find more sidebars, infographics, and other bite-sized chunks of information; more white space and less borders to make full-length articles more appealing to the eye; new colors; a new font; and more light-hearted illustrations.

Convene is working with a new design studio -- New York City-based Point Five Design -- to design and lay out the magazine.  Other Point Five clients include Columbia Journalism Review, The Paris Review, Lapham's Quarterly, and Listen magazine.

Convene is frequently recognized in the magazine and association communities for excellence in content and design.  The newest accolades to report include a Bronze EXCEL award from Association Media & Publishing (AM&P) in the General Excellence category, a Gold EXCEL for the cover of the December 2011 issue, and a Bronze EXCEL for the July 2011 cover.

In addition, the Society of Publication Designers (SPD) just named Convene's November 2011 issue as a merit award winner for cover design.   SPD recognized only 700 out of 7,000 entries across all categories in this year's annual competition.

The magazine reaches 29,000 qualified meeting professional readers.  Popular features currently include The CMP Series - which aligns with the CMP exam and allows readers to earn CEU credits, "One on One With" some of the best minds inside and out of the meetings industry, "What's Your Story?" and "Unconventional."
