Meet Troy Karnoff, Director of National Accounts for the Greater Phoenix CVB and member of GMC’s Community Service Committee.
How did your career path lead you to your current position?
I was with Marriott for 16 1/2 years and then with Hyatt for a year before entering the bureau world. My 5 1/2 years with the Los Angeles CVB and one year with San Jose both gave me experience selling the convention center and hotels for self-contained business opportunities. Phoenix was looking for that experience for this new position in Chicago. They haven’t had a presence here for eight years. Now that the economy is heading back in the right direction for meetings and we have a new center and downtown area, I am here to tell our story to all of Illinois and Wisconsin.
Did you have a mentor?
My mentors are my competitors. I am constantly asking them how they are getting the business to their destination and finding new ways to prospect and dig for “new” business.
How has membership in PCMA benefitted your career?
Getting involved on committees and then becoming chair, selling raffle tickets any way to meet people - suppliers and planners - so they know who and where to find me.
Is there a quote that inspires you?
I love the Four Agreements (from The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom by Miguel Ruiz): Be impeccable with your word, don’t take anything personally, don’t make assumptions and always do your best. This last one is my favorite.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I play volleyball indoors during the winter and beach during the summer, and being outside as much as I can, whether it’s sitting outside on my patio, restaurant, bar or riding my bike along the lake.
Do you have any "words of wisdom" for other GMC members?
Get involved. It doesn’t matter how much time you can give, just get involved. “You give what you get and you get what you give.”
