The rapid increase in the number of virtual meetings and events requires new skillsets to effectively engage members and others through digital technology. Organizations need professionals trained to plan, produce, and measure the results of their digital engagement efforts. To address this need, the Virtual Edge Institute (VEI) developed The Digital Event Strategist Certification, designed for individuals in associations, corporations, government and academia.
The certification program consists of an application process, an online learning program and an exam administered by VEI. Applicants must fulfill several prerequisites, including:
• Current or recent (within 12 months) employment in events, meetings, conventions, marketing or learning industries.
• Membership in a professional event management association such as PCMA, MPI, IAEE, ASAE, CEMA, VEI or three years’ experience in event, meeting, convention, exhibition or learning management.
• Experience in various virtual and digital environments, such as attending, producing or exhibiting in online events or meetings.
• Completion of (or will complete) 25 clock hours (or 2.5 CEUs) worth of digital-related continuing education programs in 16 key “areas of focus” within 12 months of application.
The DES Online Learning Program covers the key “areas of focus” in the exam through a 16-module course in digital event planning and production. Applicants earn CEU credit for each completed module, for a total of 16 hours in digital event training.
Applicants must pass the exam, administered online, within 12 months of application.
Because digital technology is constantly evolving and changing, all participants must recertify every two years and fulfill the continuing education requirement of 20 hours over two years. No exam will be required if certification is maintained.
Fees include $175 for the application, $595 for the online course, and $325 for the exam.
