The Massachusetts Convention Center Authority yesterday finalized the purchase of a hotel development site, a $33 million deal that’s just the beginning of its Southie land grab.
The quasi-public agency acquired 5.6 acres on D Street across from the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center where it hopes to start construction next year on two mid-priced hotels with 400 to 500 rooms, and eventually add parking garages.
Convention chief Jim Rooney said the acquisition “sets the ball rolling” toward a proposed $2 billion expansion.
