Thursday, August 14 was a pitch perfect warm and sunny Chicago morning – an idyllic setting to bring the spirit of Aloha for a “Hawaiian Luau,” created for our smiling friends at Little Brothers, Friends of the Elderly (LBFE)
. The Hawaiian Luau-themed Coffee Club brought together approximately 70 Elders and staff along with 30 GMC PCMA volunteers for a morning of food, entertainment and friendship. The attendance and excitement were more than we dreamed….so much so that most of the Elders arrived a half hour early!
Little Brothers, Friends of the Elderly
is the designated charity for GMC PCMA. LBFE is a volunteer based non-profit organization committed to relieving isolation and loneliness among the elderly by offering friendship and socialization opportunities – and GMC PCMA did just that! The Community Services subcommittee, led by Rhonda Chesney, did an exceptional job of covering every detail to ensure we authenticated a true Hawaiian Luau. No detail was missed. There was pineapple French toast, fresh fruit, breakfast burritos, pastries, Kona coffee, raffle prizes, games, decorations, goodie bags…and, not to miss a beat, there was live steel drum music, hula dancing and fresh flower leis to welcome our very excited guests.
During the course of the two-hour Coffee Club, our member volunteers and elders shared laughs and conversation while eating, drinking and listening to the beautiful steel drum sounds provided by Kent Arnsbarger. We then followed up with a hula group performance led by Shasta Hud, of Halau Hula O’ Puanani, and then the elders (and our member volunteers) participated in a joyful and enthusiastic hula lesson.
Because of the abundance of donations, each elder was able to leave with a raffle prize and a program to commemorate the event – and, of course, their beautiful flower leis (generously provided by Meet Hawaii).
The spirit of generosity, friendship and compassion among our member volunteers and industry organizations was endless and inspiring. A HUGE thank you to each one of you who volunteered your time, donations and/or creativity – it is greatly appreciated and we could not do it without each of you. To see the smile and joy of the seniors and of the LBFE staff makes it all the worthwhile.
