PCMA Education Foundation Announces the 2014 Professional Achievement Honorees

Sue M. Dykema, CAE, Janet Sperstad, CMP and Carol C. Wallace to be honored

CHICAGO, IL, September 23, 2013 – Sue M. Dykema, CAE, Janet Sperstad, CMP and Carol C. Wallace, will be honored at the 2014 Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) Education Foundation Dinner Celebrating Professional Achievement, May 14, 2014 at the Washington Hilton in Washington D.C.

“It is a privilege to honor these three tremendous women. Their leadership has helped advance our industry and continues to ensure the meetings and events space has a bright future,” said PCMA President & CEO, Deborah Sexton.

2014 Meeting Professional Honoree: Sue M. Dykema, CAE

Dykema the Executive Director for the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) has spent 30 years in the industry as both a supplier and an association executive and has been with ASAPS since 1996.

Dykema has been extremely active in PCMA throughout the years, attending her first PCMA Annual Meeting in the mid-1980s. She has served two terms as a Chapter President for the Southwest & Pacific Chapter and was awarded PCMA’s Outstanding Service to a Chapter Award in 2003. She furthered her commitment to PCMA in 2006 when she began a term as a Professional Director on the PCMA Board of Directors, eventually being selected to serve as Secretary-Treasurer. She has also served on the PCMA Nominating Committee, Medical Meetings Task Force and has been a speaker for PCMA. Outside of industry, she serves as an adult board member on the student-led California Association of Student Councils.

2014 Educator Honoree: Janet Sperstad, CMP

Sperstad, the Program Director for the Meeting and Event Management Degree Program at Madison Area Technical College in Madison, WI has a professional history which includes more than 25 years as a meeting professional and executive leader. She founded the Meeting and Event Management Associate degree in 2002 at Madison Area Technical College and is currently pursuing an advanced degree in the neuroscience of leadership. She is also the Co-Principal Investigator on a research effort to evaluate the impact of hosted buyer programs on decision making behavior and attitudes in the industry.

Sperstad is a member of the International Event Qualifications Framework Global Advisory Group for the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council, Director on the CIC CMP Board, member of Faculty Task Force for both PCMA and IAEE and just completed a term on the GMIC Board of Directors.

2014 Supplier Honoree: Carol C. Wallace

Wallace, the President & CEO of the San Diego Convention Center Corporation since 1991 has had a long and successful career in the convention center space. She played a pivotal role in the 2001 expansion of the San Diego Convention Center. She is currently working with community stakeholders on the Phase 3 Expansion of the Convention Center. She formerly worked at the Dallas Convention Center and the Colorado Convention Center and currently serves on the USTA Advisory Board.

She is a former member of the AIPC International Association of Congress Centres Board of Directors, the PCMA Education Foundation Board of Trustees and Past President of International Association of Venue Managers. In 2004 she received IAVM’s highest honor, the Charles A. McElravy Award, for her exceptional leadership and extraordinary career-long accomplishments. In 2007 Wallace received the Women of Influence Award from Venues Today.
