Letter from the President

Gary Murakami

To our valued members:

How can we continue to deliver critical education and networking opportunities for our members?

As the current president of this chapter, I challenge myself and our board this year to look at opportunities to deliver high quality learning and thoughtful networking throughout the programming of our chapter events. Our goal is to consistently enhance the professional and personal advancement of our members.

The year began with the PCMA Annual Convening Leaders Conference in Boston this past January.  The commitment of our Northern California Chapter board to PCMA and the industry was evident, as we almost had 100% attendance by our board and committee chairs.  Participation in Convening Leaders ensured that we brought back new ideas for programming and contacts for future networking and idea sharing.

Our Northern CA chapter had a successful inaugural networking event at Postrio Restaurant at Prescott Hotel in February.  With the partnership of our sponsor, Bay Area Event Photography, we were able to complement the event with complimentary professional head shots for those individuals in attendance.  Building a professional image and identity is critical, and a professional photo/image is a step in the process.

In March, our education program at Tres Restaurant focusing on Event Mobile Apps was insightful and critical, as technology continues to enhance the meetings and events industry.   Kevin Long, VP of Marketing with CrowdCompass by Cvent delivered a creative and innovative presentation on the Mobile App industry and the ways that it is being incorporated and utilized in the industry.

April was another successful networking event at the modern 25 Lusk Restaurant.  The program was enhanced by Melissa Washington with Smart Net Strategies who provided us with a unique networking game providing introductions and ideas to review on LinkedIn and the ways we can utilize the website/product for our professional growth.  We hope to invite Melissa to deliver a future program for the chapter based on the feedback and the questions that were derived from the event.  In addition, Darold Chacon with Flix-in-Motion was able to share with our members innovative ideas through his product MobiSnap to utilize the social media of Twitter and Instagram to share photo experiences with our members.

As we look into the future, please save the date for our second annual joint education conference which is a collaborative effort between the Northern CA Chapter and the Southwest Pacific Chapter.  Continuing the conference tradition which began its inaugural year last year in San Francisco, this joint conference will be held May 19-20, 2014 in Los Angeles, CA at the newly branded Hyatt Hotel.  We hope to establish this annual conference that will rotate between the two chapters areas to deliver timely education and networking for both our chapters.

Finally, please visit our website for a calendar of our future events this year.  We are planning for another networking event in June as well as a AT&T Park/SF Giants Game Day later this summer.  PCMA will also hold its mid-year Education Conference in Toronto over June 22-25, 2014 if your schedule provides you an opportunity to participate.

I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event of PCMA and/or the chapter soon!

Warm regards,

Gary Murakami, CTC, GTP, GLP, CMP
