During the International Paralympics Committee Annual Conference held in December 2011 with 417 people of whom about 120 were disabled, representing 29% of the total number of participants, the CNCC offered special services to the disabled attendees. Special services included the reservation of glass elevators, adjustment to the height of the buffet table for comfortable reach from a wheelchair level, staff assigned to accompany disabled people using the toilet areas, a specially manned information desk with information on easy access routes for local shops, restaurants and transport as well as for getting around the venue, free (with a disability certificate) storage and handicapped parking service and the impressive display of Beijing’s 30 “London” taxicabs equipped for the use of the disabled delegates.
With its eye on practicality for conferences and exhibitions the CNCC was originally designed and constructed according to the strict requirements for the 2008 Olympic Games and the 13th Summer Paralympics Games where the major theme was “One World, One Dream". The Chinese translation of the main theme uses the word "tongyi" for “One”, meaning "the same", emphasizing the whole of Mankind in the same world sharing the same dreams.
For Beijing, the Olympics and Paralympics brought many legacies including the concept of queuing at bus stops and subway stations, improved infrastructure with new sidewalks and resurfaced streets, public politeness promotions, increased green spaces in the city and increased access for persons with disabilities in public spaces around the city, in particular near the Olympic Green where the CNCC is located.
The Beijing Disabled Persons’ Federation has worked to improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities of which there are close to 1 million Beijing residents and CNCC works with Beijing Olympic City Development Association and Beijing Disabled Persons’ Federation to ensure the access is convenient for disabled event attendees.
