Seven students from the Hospitality, Tourism and Events Department of Metropolitan State College of Denver who are members of Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) attended PCMA’s annual meeting in Seattle, Washington. In Seattle, these students participated educational workshops, award ceremonies, networking luncheons, dinners, and guest speaker presentations all while networking with professionals and gaining valuable insight in the Hospitality Industry. This experience has given students unconceivable knowledge from Industry Professionals that can only be expressed as life-changing.

The professional workshops that students had the privilege of attending were both educational and motivating.  At the beginning of each day, students eagerly started their itinerary as they attended professional workshops led by industry leaders.  A few of these remarkable workshops were “Design Schemes for Dream Themes,” “Maximize the Value of Business Relationships,” “Preparing for Negotiations: Sealing the Deal in Your Favor,” and “Meeting in the Developing World.” Being able to sit-in and attend these workshops provided a sneak-peak in the Professional world of the Hospitality business. It was an honor for the students to have the opportunity to sit along side Professionals while given educational tools to use for on the job experience.

Networking lunches and dinners provided students with the opportunity to socialize with professionals, trade business cards and practice etiquette learned in the classroom.  Pictured above, students engaged in the opportunity to enjoy a variety of cuisines.  Professionals often shared tables with student enabling networking opportunities and enlightening discussions. The highlight of the networking luncheons had to be Jason Alexander as his alias Donny Clay, where he presented his famous motivating speech.

The students will all agree that the guest speakers at the Annual Meeting were very moving and very knowledgeable about the Hospitality Industry. At the beginning of each day General Session took place at 8:30am, where all attendees gathered to hear a guest speaker.  Some speakers that presented were Mich Matthews S.V.P., of Marketing Microsoft Corporation and James Spellos, CMP, President of Meeting U. Although, all guest speakers provided enlightening topics, the highlight was the closing speech of Robert. F Kennedy His moving speech “Our Environmental Destiny” was so moving it brought tears to the audience’s eyes. The guest speakers ease and outgoing personalities made it such a delight to attend.

These seven students are very grateful for the opportunity to be involved with PCMA’s annual meeting in Seattle, Washington. It was very educational, exciting and life changing. It was an honor to attend this meeting and would highly recommend all Hospitality, Tourism, and Event students attend an annual meeting. Hopefully they do, they to can get an insiders look into the world of Hospitality and find which facet of the industry they fit in to, just as we did.
