Florida Continues to Offer Fresh Opportunities for Extraordinary Attendee Experiences

by Peggy Swisher

Meet in Florida
The Sunshine State Develops Programs, Trade Shows, and
New Facilities With Planners and Meetings in Mind
More meeting planners are holding their meetings in Florida as a direct result of Florida Encounter, according to a survey conducted by VISIT FLORIDA, the state's official source for travel planning. Florida Encounter is an exclusive three-day appointment trade show, bringing meeting professionals together with Florida's premier meeting suppliers for one-on-one appointments.

The opportunity to meet with many suppliers from around the state in one setting saves planners the time and expense of visiting each site. Meeting professionals schedule their own appointments, so they can meet only with suppliers that will serve their groups' needs. This year, invitations will be extended to executive-level meeting professionals to attend Florida Encounter and a track will be developed especially for them.

At the 26th annual Florida Encounter in Naples last year, 81 percent of meeting planners in attendance stated they plan to book three or more of their meetings in Florida, up from the prior year, when 71 percent indicated they would book meetings in the Sunshine State.

As a result of this increase, suppliers estimate a higher dollar impact of the meetings they expect to secure.

The 27th annual Florida Encounter (http://encounter.visitflorida.com) will be held in Beaches of South Walton Oct. 27-31, 2007. Beaches of South Walton is home to the 2,400-acre Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, as well as the community of Grayton Beach, voted the No. 1 beach in the continental United States. The 600-room full-service Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa is the largest beachfront hotel in Northwest Florida. The WaterColor Inn, a 60-room boutique-style hotel located directly on the Gulf of Mexico, is ideal for small corporate retreats.

VISIT FLORIDA Promotes State Through New Web Site for Meeting Professionals

  • VISIT FLORIDA is launching a Web site in April for meeting professionals as part of its Official Meeting Professionals Program. This statewide, integrated program includes an industry-leading Web site, annual print guide, and regular e-mail communications with meeting professionals to keep Florida top of mind. The combined goal of this program is to bring more meetings to Florida by promoting Floridian destinations, properties, climate, and group benefits to more than 100,000 meeting professionals across the country.
  • The Web site - meetings.VISITFLORIDA.com - will feature search options, news, and destination information unique to Florida. Powerful search engines, cutting-edge functionality and an innovative micro site component will allow meeting professionals to compare properties and create personalized presentations. A complementary print guide will be published in August.
  • The program is the direct result of a joint research initiative on how meeting professionals gather information and make destination decisions conducted by Miles Media Group and VISIT FLORIDA. The David Kliman Group and Robinson Consultants conducted focus groups in Miami, New York, Washington, D.C., and Chicago. Feedback from meeting professionals in attendance at the 2006 Florida Encounter was also incorporated into this program. In addition, PhoCusWright contributed in-depth information on the meetings industry and the growth of Internet usage as a primary research tool.

But no matter where on the grounds they're held, each and every meeting at Amelia Island Plantation can become truly memorable. Expanded Venue
Daytona Beach Is Being Transformed With Opportunities for Groups
You're sure to be pleasantly surprised at all that the new Daytona Beach has to offer! Best known for its 23 miles of sparkling beaches, the Daytona Beach area has also become well known for its growing inventory of quality accommodations and meeting facilities. * "The Daytona Beach area is seeing new meeting and convention facilities open at a fairly rapid pace," said Sally Gardiner, director of convention sales for the Daytona Beach Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. "Daytona International Speedway's multimillion-dollar infield redesign, which features more than 230,000 square feet of new meeting space, has become a popular addition to the area's offerings. In addition, the News-Journal Center now offers groups the option of a scenic riverfront meeting venue in our beautiful downtown historic district."

The News-Journal Center, a dramatic architectural landmark in Daytona Beach's historic downtown district, is situated alongside the picturesque Halifax River. The $29 million cultural center features an 850-seat traditional proscenium theater with an orchestra pit, as well as a 260-seat studio theater and conference rooms.

Leading Daytona Beach's transformation into a preferred meeting destination is the $76 million expansion of the Ocean Center Convention Complex. The expansion will add 100,000 square feet of exhibit space and 30,000 square feet of new meeting space, nearly tripling the facility's current size. Construction is scheduled for a summer 2008 completion, with conventions continuing uninterrupted throughout the remodeling period.

In addition, the Mary McLeod Bethune Performing Arts Center is new to the entertainment scene, and historic Peabody Auditorium has completed substantial renovations. This facility plays host to the London Symphony Orchestra during the acclaimed Florida International Festival that returns to the area in July of 2007.

Groups meeting in the Daytona Beach area will find accommodations to fit any budget. Several hotels have recently undergone multimillion-dollar refurbishment projects, including the 742-room Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort, The Plaza Resort & Spa, and The Shores Resort & Spa, a new, four-star resort.

The Shores Resort & Spa now features a fine dining restaurant and more than 17,000 square feet of meeting space, and the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort has undergone its own $20 million refurbishment. The area's mainland is thriving as well, with several new hotels, including Homewood Suites and Residence Inn, opening near Daytona International Speedway.

The resort area's 23 miles of sparkling beaches are perfect for sandcastle building, cycling, jogging, fishing, or just relaxing in the sun. A burgeoning golf destination, it is home to several championship courses that make it an ideal spot for year-round golfing fun. Golf pros and novices will enjoy play on the area's acclaimed greens, which include courses at LPGA International, Halifax Plantation Golf Club, and the Golf Club at Cypress Head.

Unique shopping and dining spots can be found along Beach Street in historic downtown Daytona Beach. The area's newest shopping, dining, and entertainment complex, Ocean Walk Shoppes at Ocean Walk Village, is the perfect place to unwind. Enjoy the 10-cinema theater complex, restaurants and coffee shops, and plenty of apparel and gift stores - all just steps away from the Atlantic Ocean.

Two new resort spas also await visitors - SpaTerre at The Shores Resort & Spa and the Vacation Therapy Spa at Ocean Walk Resort. They join Ocean Waters Spa at The Plaza Resort & Spa in offering a complete respite that rejuvenates the mind, body, and spirit.

Visitors can also choose to explore the area's museums and historic sites, enjoy an evening of live professional theater, or experience the excitement of NASCAR at Daytona USA. The area's newest family attraction is Daytona Lagoon water park and family entertainment center. Daytona Lagoon features 10 giant waterslides, a state-of-the-art arcade, meeting rooms, and more. Several sightseeing tours cruise the region's ecologically rich inland waterways, each providing its own unique glimpse of the Daytona Beach area. A breathtaking bird's-eye view of the area can be had from Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse in the town of Ponce Inlet, the southernmost point of the Daytona Beach area. Located beside the lighthouse is another popular attraction, the Marine Science Center.

Conveniently located in Central East Florida, the Daytona Beach area is easy to reach via Interstate 95 and Interstate 4. Direct flights to Daytona Beach International Airport from the Atlanta, New York City, and Washington, D.C. metro areas are now available.

Top Notch

Record Development Spurs Continued interest in Premier Destination

There's no better time than now to bring groups to Greater Fort Lauderdale. While the area's status as one of the nation's finest beach destinations has always made it a favorite among meeting planners, the ongoing debut of top-notch hotel properties, coupled with other developments, truly distinguishes it from the pack.

Groups enjoy access to more than 30,000 guest rooms in more than 565 hotels, resorts, and superior small lodging properties (establishments with 50 rooms or fewer that have met quality and service criteria). The area's roster of hotels continues to expand; hotel construction/renovation highlights include:

  • The recently completed Hilton Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort offers 10,000 square feet of meeting space; 373 well-appointed studio suites; a 15,000-square-foot Sunrise Terrace with a zero-entry pool and cabanas; beach, grocery, and bath concierges, a European spa; three dining options; children's programs; and golf privileges at the Parkland Golf & Country Club.
  • This month marked the debut of the St. Regis Resort, Fort Lauderdale. Florida's first St. Regis property, the $240 million landmark resort features 166 luxury guest rooms (including 20 elegant suites), a renowned gourmet restaurant, the St. Regis Spa, and 20,000 square feet of oceanfront meeting space.
  • The new Crowne Plaza Hollywood Beach Sian Resort boasts 311 spacious rooms overlooking the ocean and Intracoastal Waterway. Amenities include large balconies in all guest rooms, a landscaped infinity pool, an upscale indoor/outdoor restaurant, a marina, and 6,000 square feet of meeting space.
  • The Harbor Beach Marriott Resort & Spa is wrapping up a $25 million renovation of its 637 guest rooms and suites. Already featuring new 32-inch flat screen TVs, accommodations will receive new furnishings, art work, fabrics, and lighting.
  • A $50 million renovation is under way at the Fort Lauderdale Grande Hotel & Yacht Club, formerly the Fort Lauderdale Marina Marriott. Situated across the street from the Broward County Convention Center, the property is operated by LXR Luxury Resorts. LXR is also investing $25 million in significant renovations of the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six Resort & Spa. Refurbishments of the 100 lanai guest rooms have been completed, landscaping has been added to the lanai courtyard, and a three-pool waterfall oasis has been added. The resort's famed Pier Top, long known for its panoramic views, is now an ultra-modern small meetings and event space.
  • Donald J. Trump has two new five-star condo hotel developments planned on Fort Lauderdale beach to open in 2008. Trump International Hotel & Tower Fort Lauderdale will resemble a 1925 luxury cruise liner and will feature 298 fully furnished deluxe one- and two-bedroom suites, while the 95-room Trump Las Olas Beach Resort will lie across from Bahia Mar Marina.
  • Opening next year, Starwood Hotels' $220 million W Fort Lauderdale Hotel and Residences will be the first W Hotel in Florida, and offer 346 rooms, more than 13,000 square feet of meeting space, 171 luxury residences, a restaurant, and a 10,000-square-foot spa. Meanwhile, other hotels in the Greater Fort Lauderdale area are actively seeking to accommodate meetings:
  • The Hollywood Beach Marriott, located on Hollywood's Broadwalk, offers all the services and amenities needed for world-class meetings. This AAA Four Diamond resort has a 12,000-square-foot conference center, the area's largest private beach, fine dining, and a full-service spa.
  • For more than 70 years, the Riverside Hotel has set the standard for unsurpassed accommodations, service, and cuisine. With more than 11,000 square feet of state-of-the-art meeting space and 217 guest rooms, the Riverside Hotel is located right in the heart of Las Olas Boulevard and just minutes from the beach and airport.
  • The newly renovated Sheraton Yankee Trader Hotel boasts 459 deluxe guest rooms with water views; 10,000 square feet of permanent meeting space; an additional 6,500 square feet of space available in its new Pavilion from January to July; and 3,000 square feet of outdoor, poolside ocean-view event space.
  • Located on the beach, the Westin Diplomat Resort features 998 rejuvenating guest rooms, all featuring Westin's signature Heavenly Bed; on-site, award-winning restaurants; championship golf; and a full-service spa.

What's more, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau has extended its meeting planners incentive program to generate group business between Aug. 1, 2008 and Oct. 15, 2008. Planners booking meetings to be held at the Broward County Convention Center during this time period and committing to a minimum of 600 peak-night hotel rooms, will receive free rental of all floor space throughout the convention center, with attrition fees at contracted hotels waived.

Of course, unique venues and attractions are also part of the meetings package. Attendees can trade their business suits for bathing suits and kick back at a "Beach Bash" theme party or take a leisurely yacht cruise on the Intracoastal Waterway. The world-class, state-of-the-art IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame & Museum fascinates visitors with seven galleries, an outdoor marina, a living wetlands, a theater, and indoor/outdoor demonstrations.

Shopping is also hopping in the area, beginning with the trendy boutiques of Las Olas Boulevard. Venues that combine retail, dining, and entertainment establishments for a more complete South Florida experience also abound. Seminole Paradise at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood houses 25 of the most trendy retail shops in South Florida, along with 10 restaurants and 10 entertainment venues inside the Paradise Live District. The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale, home of Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue stores as well as a new Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa, now has a dining and nightlife scene with The Capital Grill steakhouse, Seasons 52 fresh grill, P.F. Chang's and the Blue Martini upscale nightclub.

A $38 million high-end fashion district known as The Colonnade Outlets at Sawgrass has opened at Sawgrass Mills, the world's largest designer outlet mall, and the The Pompano Fashion Square in Pompano Beach is undergoing a complete renovation.

Updates of the property's rooms, common areas and, recently, its new Mandolin's Restaurant have also been completed.

The Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate has earned awards for its service to meetings and guests. The resort has 730 guest rooms, including 35 suites, and more than 70,000 square feet of elegant meeting space. It offers access to championship golf, including the headquarters of the David Leadbetter Golf Academy.

Complementing the arena at Osceola Heritage Park is the 89,500-square-foot Exhibition Building.

Perfect Recipe
An International City With Top-Rated Hotels, Spas, Beaches, and More

Only a few select destinations offer the perfect recipe for successful meetings. With the sophistication and excitement of an international city, top-rated hotels, spas, beaches, water sports, tennis, golf, great shopping, dining, and fabled nightlife ideal for celebrity spotting, Greater Miami and the Beaches ranks among them.

What more could a planner want, except the time to put together a fantastic itinerary?

Located in close proximity of the area's fabulous beaches, historic Art Deco District, or the heart of downtown, Greater Miami's first-class facilities offer state-of-the-art technology and are equipped to provide elaborate exhibition displays, audiovisual setups, and United Nations-style simultaneous translations.

All are convenient to area shopping, dining, and exciting nightlife. The Miami Beach Convention Center has undergone a $13 million renovation, with nearly $3 million invested in a telecommunications infrastructure upgrade. With one million square feet of exhibition space, unlimited floor load capacity, 35-foot ceilings, and 68 adjacent, reconfigurable meeting rooms, the center continues to be among the nation's prime convention venues.

Groups can also convene at the Miami Convention Center, which offers 37 well-appointed meeting rooms (including a 444-seat auditorium and 117-seat lecture hall) and can accommodate up to 5,000 people in a variety of configurations.

Greater Miami and the Beaches offers more than 48,000 rooms for group and meeting business, in properties that range from luxurious to budget-friendly.

What's more, convenient downtown, beach, and airport locations, superb service, spectacular views, first-class recreational facilities, and award-winning dining are only part of the amenities that attract millions of visitors annually.

Some hotels and resorts specialize in in-room hot tubs; others feature world-famous golf courses, tennis courts, and health spas.

When meetings are finished for the day, recreational options are limited only by one's imagination. In addition to its beautiful beaches, the area boasts a host of historic sites, nature parks, and attractions. Delegates may also want to enhance their stay with a pre- or post-meeting cruise - more than three million passengers pass through the Port of Miami annually.

Sizzling nightlife, more than 7,000 exceptional restaurants, and infinite shopping possibilities complete this first- class meeting package.

Indeed, Greater Miami and the Beaches offers the best compromise between getting away from it all and being a part of it all. In short, it is the ultimate choice for association meetings.

A Natural
Premier Eco-Friendly Property Poised for Debut

Holding exceptional meetings on Florida's Gulf Coast will become the norm for groups when the new Sandpearl Resort opens on Clearwater Beach in summer of 2007. Meticulously designed to capture the sophisticated, yet comfortably casual essence of Southwest Florida, the 253-room, luxury hotel will be located in the Renaissance Dis- trict of Clearwater Beach on Mandalay Avenue, along 700 feet of gorgeous Gulf of Mexico beachfront.

An eco-friendly, environmentally sound design will rank among the Sandpearl Resort's many distinctive features. JMC Communities, the resort's developer and owner, has been resolute in ensuring that the resort is designed to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification requirements. Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED is a national standard for developing buildings that are environmentally responsible in terms of improving energy efficiency and air and water quality, reduction of solid waste, conservation of natural resources, reduction of operational costs, improved employee productivity, and reducing strain on the local infrastructure. This will enable the beauty of Clearwater Beach to be shared with generations to come.

Equally unique is the world-class Sandpearl Spa, which will offer guests innovative therapeutic treatments that embrace the environment. Treatment offerings include thalassotherapy (therapy via ocean) and Salus per Aqua (health via water).

Participants will be able to take Audubon excursions to nesting observations at Three-Rooker Island and observe dolphins and sea turtles. Or they can kayak, canoe, parasail, or cruise along the beautiful waters of Mandalay channel. Local artists will provide instruction on a featured craft so guests can create their own keepsakes.

Caretta on the Gulf will boast sweeping gulf views and an upscale dining experience featuring chef's table dining, as well as dining within the wine cellar and ceviche and raw bar. Those seeking a more casual dining experience will appreciate Tate Island Grill, a breezy bar and grill.

At the Sandpearl Resort, planning a meeting will be as easy as a day at the beach. The property will feature 25,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor function space. With more than 5,000 square feet of event space, the Hunter Ballroom is the perfect setting for annual conferences, large executive dinners, intimate private parties, and more. The ballroom can be divided into three equally sized rooms, each with more than 1,700 square feet of space, while the prefunction area provides more than 2,300 square feet of space and room for 300 reception guests.

Four elegant, state-of-the-art meeting rooms and two board rooms showcase dramatic views of the Gulf of Mexico. Combined, they offer 15,000 square feet of indoor function space. Up to 300 reception guests can also enjoy prefunction space spanning nearly 3,000 square feet. As an alternative to the ballroom or board room, hold an event al fresco on the 6,750-square-foot Gulf Lawn overlooking the beach and the Gulf of Mexico, or poolside at the 2,112-square-foot Pool Lawn.

Dream Come True
'Year of a Million Dreams' Brings Record-Breaking Attendance
Disney is rolling out the red carpet like never before dur- ing the Year of a Million Dreams celebration that runs throughout 2007. Supported by one of the largest marketing and promotional campaigns in Disney history, the event is sure to enhance Disney's proven ability to drive record-breaking attendance for meetings and conventions.

Celebrating the dreams of guests from around the world, Disney Cast Members (Disney-speak for "employees") will make dreams come true every day for randomly selected visitors. More than a million dreams in all will come true during the year-long event - like a chance to spend the night in a spectacular new suite inside Cinderella Castle. The Year of a Million Dreams will also mark the debut of new attractions, entertainment, and event venues that will be available for private group events. Here's a sample of what's in store:

Groups will discover all-new excitement in the four world-famous Disney Theme Parks. At Epcot, The Seas with Nemo & Friends takes guests aboard "clam-mobiles" in search of the clownfish made famous in "Finding Nemo," to experience a stunning display of new technology inside a 5.7-million-gallon saltwater aquarium.

At Disney's Animal Kingdom, the Great Barrier Reef comes to life in "Finding Nemo - The Musical." Show buy-outs are available, and the 1,571-seat theater is available for private events.

The latest resort news comes from Disney's Contemporary Resort, one of Disney's six dedicated convention properties. The 1,008 guest rooms of this landmark resort have been completely "re-imagined" to include new décor, furniture, carpet, lighting, and bathroom fixtures. The new rooms feature flat screen televisions, high-speed Internet access, designer bedding, and a dedicated workstation.

Disney's Contemporary Resort offers more than 115,000 square feet of function space, is conveniently located adjacent to the Magic Kingdom park, and offers easy monorail access.

The "Disney Difference" is a collection of unrivaled meeting support services and benefits, including access to the Disney Event Group for full-service technical, creative, and production support. Disney Institute professional development programs enable participants to meet with Disney leaders, benchmark proven success strategies, and discover ways to adapt Disney best practices for their own organizations.

Disney's Magical Express provides Disney resort guests with complimentary airport transfers, luggage delivery, and advance airline check-in, eliminating the need for groups to book private shuttles or taxis.
