Hartford
Ranking among the top 6 percent of North American metropolitan areas for its abundance of art and culture, Greater Hartford features dining, entertainment, and leisure activities for every taste. From live performances at the Tony Award-winning Hartford Stage and the intimate Off-Broadway-style TheaterWorks, to classic collections and special exhibitions at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, to innovative films and galleries at Real Art Ways, to sunset dinner river cruises, the Greater Hartford area is teeming with excitement. Cultural heritage lovers can explore centuries of historic homesteads and well-preserved architecture and landscapes. One of Hartford's most popular tourist attractions is Twain's own Victorian Gothic mansion, where he wrote seven major works, including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. It's located right next door to the gardened home of Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of the anti-slavery classic Uncle Tom's Cabin. Hartford boasts more than 30 three- and four-star restaurants, offering every type of ethnic cuisine with prices to fit any budget. The city sizzles at night as downtown bars and clubs serve up some of the best jazz, blues, and rock in Southern New England. And, it is all less than 60 minutes away from the sparkling Long Island Sound, the scenic Berkshire Mountains, and two of the world's largest casinos. Accessible to more than 23 million people within a two-hour drive, Hartford offers ease and affordability, with new hotels and meeting facilities in an intimate, historic, and walkable downtown setting. The spectacular riverside Connecticut Convention Center opened in June of 2005 with 540,000 square feet of new meeting and convention space, high-speed telecommunications facilities, and a renowned in-house chef.
