Association Resorts

Natural Beauty Inspires Groups at Resort Properties

by Julie Ritzer Ross

Bermuda

Resort Development, New Air Service Beckon Groups

Renowned for its 21 miles of pink sand beaches, friendly people, and sophisticated ambiance, Bermuda is a chic island escape where rich history, diverse cultures, and exceptional beauty meet. New resort development and expanded air service, coupled with the fact that all meetings held in Bermuda are tax-deductible, make this paradise even more alluring for association groups.

Next year will bring major excitement to Bermuda with the debut of Tucker's Point Hotel & Spa, the first luxury property to open on the island in 35 years. To be situated in the exclusive residential area of Tucker's Town, the five-star, $100 million property is rising on the site of the former Marriott Castle Harbour Resort and will feature a new golf course, a beach and tennis club, and a retail and commercial center. The Georgian-style hotel will also boast 103 luxurious guest rooms and suites, a 10,000-square-foot spa, a 12,000-square-foot yoga and tai chi lawn, a 5,000-square-foot conference center, two restaurants, and two swimming pools.

Meanwhile, the Wyndham Bermuda Resort & Spa has closed for a complete renovation to be unveiled in 2009. The $200 million dollar project involves the demolition of the property's 150-room Carlton Wing to make room for a five-star luxury property. Another feature of the resort, The Southampton Club, will offer tennis, squash, and exercise facilities; pool and beach access; spa amenities; and fine dining options. Getting to Bermuda is also easier and more affordable than ever. In addition to flights from its hub at New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport, JetBlue Airways has introduced one non-stop daily flight between Boston's Logan International Airport and Bermuda. Delta has launched an additional flight to the island from New York City's LaGuardia Airport to supplement its service between Bermuda and Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport. In a limited time offer, new group bookings of 15 rooms or more for a least three nights are eligible for a $200 per person credit.

Booking must occur by Dec. 31, 2007 for travel between Nov. 1, 2007 and March 31, 2008. Additional travel is valid Nov. 1, 2008 and March 31, 2009 or Nov. 1, 2009 and March 31, 2010; certain restrictions apply.

Outside of meetings, delegates will discover a wealth of duty-free shopping options on Front Street, Bermuda's capital city. More than 150 world-class dining establishments are also found throughout the island. History buffs will want to visit St. George's, Bermuda's original capital and home to the oldest continuously operating Anglican Church in the Western Hemisphere. With eight golf courses - more per square mile than any other destination in the world - plus stunning scenery and an unpredictable wind factor, Bermuda is also a haven for golfers. Visitors to Bermuda in 2007 will have the opportunity to see some of the world's top golfers compete in The PGA Grand Slam of Golf, the season-ending showcase featuring golf's premier foursome. The tournament will be held on Oct. 16 - 17 at The Mid Ocean Club and The Fairmont Southampton.

Cancun

Easily Accessible Resort Paradise Has Something for Everyone

The splendor of un- touched nature. The storied history and enduring culture of Mayan civilization. Superb resorts and world-class amenities. Modern conveniences and friendly hospitality. Extreme sports and extraordinary golf. All these and more await groups convening in Cancun, Mexico. Enveloping visitors with the sensations of a remote, exotic destination, yet easily accessible from major U.S. airports, this island, in the state of Quintana Roo, is a destination meeting attendees won't soon forget.

When it comes to golf, Cancun - whose nine beautiful courses blend with the idyllic setting of the Mexican Caribbean - is a true paradise. Each course presents its own distinctive design and natural challenges, from wind shear, grass quality, roughs, and lakes, to sand traps and, of course, the distraction of breathtaking land and seascapes. A balmy average yearly temperature of about 80 degrees Fahrenheit allows golf enthusiasts to enjoy the sport year-round, far from the rigors of winter and the excessive heat of summer. There are courses throughout the state's resort destinations, close to top-rated hotels, spas, and restaurants that offer world-class services.

Cancun also offers a full complement of world-class spas designed to help delegates unwind from a day of meetings. A Cancun spa experience combines native herbs and ancient Mayan healing rituals with the latest stress-reducing technologies and treatments. Guests can try a traditional temazcal steam bath, seaside full-body massage, or thalassotherapy seaweed wrap; relax as expert therapists provide natural treatments with plants and flowers; or get a fresh restart with cleansing detoxification treatments. While the extraordinary spa facilities found in Cancun range from rustic to ultramodern, and include both indoor and outdoor facilities, they are all alike in the high standard of quality offered.

There's also no better place than Cancun for water sports and eco-tourism. Guests at the Camino Real Cancún have access to a calm, artificial lagoon ideal for viewing tropical fish and sea turtles from small to large. Intermediates can head to Punta Nizúc, where coral outcroppings attract large numbers of fish. Parque Nacional El Garrafón, across from Cancún on Isla Mujeres, is another good spot for beginners and intermediates; tour boats go there daily from Cancún and carry snorkeling equipment. Snorkeling equipment is also available for rent at all the marinas and some of the hotels.

At Punta Nizúc, divers and snorkelers can explore the starting point of the Belize Barrier Reef, which runs parallel to the Quintana Roo coast some 250 km (150 miles) south to the Gulf of Honduras. Resort courses (for one dive accompanied by the divemaster) and certification classes are offered. Additionally, Hobie Cat and sunfish rentals are available at a few hotels and most marinas. Parasailing and water skiing opportunities abound at Cancun's beaches as well.

Rising along 700 feet of sparkling Gulf of Mexico beachfront in the Village of Mandalay, the 253-room luxury hotel is being meticulously designed to capture the sophisticated, yet comfortably casual essence of Florida's West Coast and will set a new standard for resort properties.

The Sandpearl Resort will serve as home to the unique Sandpearl Spa, the premier facility of its kind in Clearwater Beach. The world-class spa will offer guests innovative therapeutic and result-oriented treatments and programs that embrace the environment and resort community. Treatment offerings will focus on the time-honored spa tradition of ocean therapy, with thalassotherapy (therapy via ocean) and Salus per Aqua (health via water) serving as the organic anchors of the therapy program.

Sandpearl will also offer a variety of exclusive life-enriching programs, ranging from Audubon excursions to nesting observations at Three-Rooker Island. Clearwater Beach is the perfect spot to kayak, canoe, parasail, or just cruise along the beautiful waters of Mandalay channel. The Artist in Residence program will feature monthly visits by local artists, who will provide expert guidance and instruction using a featured craft so guests can create their own keepsakes.

For indulgences of the culinary kind, Caretta on the Gulf, one of the resort's two main restaurants, will boast sweeping gulf views and an upscale dining experience featuring Chef's table dining, as well as dining within the wine cellar and ceviche and raw bar. Tate Island Grill, a breezy bar and grill named for the original settler of Clearwater Beach, will provide a more casual oceanfront dining experience in an atmosphere reminiscent of old tavern days.

What's more, an eco-friendly, environmentally sound design will rank among the Sandpearl Resort's many other distinctive features. JMC Communities, the resort's developer and owner, has been resolute in ensuring that the resort is designed to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification requirements. Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED is a national standard for developing buildings that are environmentally responsible. This will enable the beauty of Clearwater Beach to be shared with generations to come.

As if that weren't enough, first-class function facilities will make meetings held at the Sandpearl Resort as easy to plan as they are productive. The property will feature 25,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor function space, allowing it to satisfy a wide range of requirements. Four elegant, state-of-the-art meeting rooms and two board rooms will showcase dramatic views of the Gulf of Mexico. Combined, they will offer 15,000 square feet of indoor function space, and prefunction space will span nearly 3,000 square feet. The Sandpearl Resort will also offer alternatives to the traditional ballroom or board room. Enjoy events al fresco on the 6,750-square-foot Gulf Lawn overlooking the beach and the Gulf of Mexico, or have fun poolside at the 2,112-square-foot Pool Lawn.

The Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa

Property Overflows with Abundance of Resort Amenities

It's no secret that the ideal resort meeting is a perfect combination of work and play. At The Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa, groups enjoy both - and more.

Spanning 39 stories, The Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa is positioned on 432,855 square feet of beachfront. The award-winning property has received top honors from Conde Nast Traveler magazine and Zagat, along with the Inner Circle Award, Pinnacle Award, and Awards of Excellence from Corporate & Incentive Travel.

To say that The Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa offers a multitude of resort amenities would be an understatement. The property features a 155-acre, Joe Lee-designed golf course managed by Troon Golf. The course's four par-5 holes include a 570-yard hole, one of the longest in South Florida, and the second hole highlights magnificent island green. PGA golf instruction is available.

Meanwhile, the Tennis Center boasts 10 clay courts and stadium seating for 300 people. Six courts are available for night play, and professional tennis instruction may be arranged.

Spa enthusiasts will revel in The Spa at The Diplomat, a 30,000-square-foot, full-service, garden courtyard spa that offers an array of face and body treatments in 20 treatment rooms. The Spa also has luxurious men's and women's locker areas with separate lounges, steam rooms, whirlpools, and outdoor patios, plus comprehensive fitness facilities and a private spa pool. In addition to the spa pool, the resort features two Jacuzzis and an outdoor-bridged pool with an infinity edge, see-through bottom, and waterfalls flowing into a 240-foot lagoon-style pool below.

For a one-of-a-kind team-building experience, consider the new Corporate Quest program developed in conjunction with InnerWork Company, one of the nation's leading training and consulting firms on interactive and meeting facilitation methods. The program is held on an outdoor challenge course at The Diplomat Country Club & Spa adjacent to the property. Participants step into a harness and climb a 65-foot Quest pole, the highest ropes course in Florida and perhaps North America, then "leap for a personal goal" supported by professionals from InnerWork. Corporate Quest is an addition to the resort's already unique team-building programming.

When it's time to get down to business, The Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa accommodates groups in its convention center, located directly on the Atlantic Ocean. The facility provides more than 200,000 square feet of meeting and convention space, including an unobstructed, 50,000-square-foot Great Hall, four ballrooms with dividing air walls, and 39 breakout rooms. High-speed Internet access; fiber optic lines for direct camera feed, and T-1 phone lines are available, without exception, in every room. On-site audiovisual/video staff stand ready to handle planners' every request. The convention center also offers full-service catering, and kosher kitchen service is available for up to 1,200 people.

Walt Disney World Resort

The Place Where Dreams Come True

Disney's "Year of a Million Dreams" celebration is now in full swing. Driving record-breaking attendance for meetings and conventions, it's a "dream come true" for association planners and other meeting professionals who count on destination appeal to drive attendance.

Disney cast members (Disney-speak for "employees") are making more than a million dreams come true every day for randomly selected guests. Some of the dreams fulfilled include money-can't-buy experiences, like a chance to spend the night in a spectacular new suite inside Cinderella Castle.

"Special celebrations like this - plus our outstanding facilities, creativity, and service - make Disney a top choice for association professionals and a perennial favorite with planners and attendees alike," said George Aguel, senior vice president, Walt Disney Parks & Resorts. "With new attractions, entertainment and venues available for private group events, it's never been easier to mix business with pleasure."

New in the Disney Theme Parks
Association professionals will discover all-new excitement in the four world-famous Disney Theme Parks.

At Epcot, The Seas with Nemo & Friends takes guests aboard "clam-mobiles" in search of the playful clownfish made famous in the Disney•Pixar blockbuster movie "Finding Nemo." The attraction features a stunning display of new technology that brings the stars of the film to life, enabling them to swim along with the live marine life inside the six-million-gallon saltwater aquarium. The venue is also available for private events.

At Disney's Animal Kingdom, the Great Barrier Reef comes to colorful life in Finding Nemo - The Musical, featuring spectacular scenery, elaborate puppetry and music by Tony-Award-winning composer Robert Lopez. Show buy-outs are available, and the 1,571-seat theater is available for private events.

At the Magic Kingdom Park, The Laugh Floor Comedy Club is an all-new interactive attraction where attendees can laugh, joke and match wits with comedian wannabes recruited by Mike Wazowski, the one-eyed hero from Disney•Pixar's "Monsters, Inc." This Tomorrowland "club" seats up to 400, and the show itself can easily be customized for private group events.

New In the Convention Resorts
The latest resort news comes from Disney's Contemporary Resort. In true Disney fashion, the 655 guest rooms of this landmark resort have been completely "reimagined" to include flat-screen televisions, designer bedding, and a dedicated workstation that offers ergonomic design and convenient access to power and modems. The Contemporary also offers groups 115,000 square feet of function space.

Meeting at Disney, planners also discover the "Disney Difference" - meeting support services and benefits unrivaled in the industry. Newest among these is Disney's Magical Express, a groundbreaking service that provides Disney resort guests with complimentary airport transfers, luggage delivery and advance airline check-in. Disney's Magical Express eliminates the need for groups to book private shuttles or taxis and offers significant savings opportunities for associations.
