PCMA’s First Zero-Waste Annual Meeting

The 51st PCMA Annual Meeting in Toronto was not only PCMA's first annual meeting outside the United States, but it was also PCMA's first zero-waste annual meeting and Canada's first zero-waste convention. "This is a proud first for our association as we work to stay in the forefront of meeting trends and technologies," said Deborah Sexton, PCMA president and CEO. "For Toronto, this is an achievement that puts the destination and the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC) at the head of the class in a growing field." PCMA's annual meeting typically generates 90,000 cans or bottles, 75,000 cups, 87,500 napkins, and 62,500 plates. Through zero-waste efforts, trained staff at the MTCC diverted 98.5 percent of PCMA's material (as measured by weight) from the local landfill. "This is a fantastic number and it speaks to our collective ability to improve the environmental footprint of our industry," said Barry Smith, MTCC president and CEO.
