LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Las Vegas Resorts Go Out of Their Way for Meetings

Dear Meeting Manager:
With first-class accommodations, dining, shopping, and entertainment, Las Vegas is well known as the premier leisure and business destination in the world. A commitment to customer service makes Las Vegas the perfect place for your meetings and conventions. Las Vegas resorts are dedicated to attending to the needs of their customers, and corporate clients are certainly valued clientele. The destination is a leader in embracing advances in technology, connectivity, and other business amenities. From lavish board rooms and grand ballrooms to high-tech meeting and presentation rooms, Las Vegas resorts go out of their way to make sure your meeting is the most productive and successful possible.

Las Vegas continues to grow, with approximately $40 billion in resort construction projects slated to be completed over the next five years, including Cosmopolitan, CityCenter, Echelon, Encore, Fountainebleau, and more. Each new project includes ample space to serve the meeting planner, adding to the existing 9.7 million square feet of meeting and convention space citywide. Las Vegas also boasts three of the 10 largest convention facilities in the country, including the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC), Sands Expo Center, and Mandalay Bay Convention Center. And another large-scale meetings and convention facility is planned to open at Echelon at the end of the decade.

Transportation is also a key element for which Las Vegas has allocated ample resources. Located just minutes from McCarran International Airport, the majority of Las Vegas' top meeting facilities are easily and conveniently accessible by taxi cab, shuttle bus, and limousine. The Las Vegas Monorail provides a convenient alternative to rental cars and taxi cabs, stopping at seven locations along the east side of the Strip. The CAT bus system provides access along the Strip and connections to downtown Las Vegas aboard the British-style, double-decker Deuce buses.

And, as always, it is hard to compete with Las Vegas for amenities your delegates can enjoy after the workday is through. The destination continues to provide the best in entertainment options, with world-class shows such as The Beatles' "Love" by Cirque du Soleil, "Phantom: the Las Vegas Spectacular," "Bette Midler's The Showgirl Must Go On," and the debut of "Jersey Boys." First-class dining opportunities continue to expand in Las Vegas, with legendary names such as Joël Robuchon, Alain Ducasse, and Daniel Boulud, and celebrity names like Emeril Lagasse, Wolfgang Puck, and Bobby Flay serving up dishes.

Las Vegas resorts also recognize their customers' need to relax; as a result, they have some of the best spas around, some available 24 hours a day.

Las Vegas is focused on making your meeting or convention - no matter the size and scope - the greatest event your organization has hosted. Contact us at the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority to get your event started.

Sincerely,
Rossi Ralenkotter

LAS VEGAS OVERVIEW

Developments Continue in City for All Meetings

Truly a "city for all meetings," Las Vegas has everything association groups could possibly desire in a destination - and more. Here, groups will discover premier meeting facilities and hotel accommodations, as well as an extensive menu of acclaimed restaurants and seemingly limitless entertainment options: from casino gaming to nightlife, to shopping and golf. More than 9,000 new guest rooms are slated to be added to Las Vegas' hotel inventory this year, and nearly $40 billion in new development is planned or under way between 2008 and 2012, including approximately 40,000 hotel and motel rooms, and five million square feet of meeting space. Here's a sampling of the latest developments on the hotel, dining, and entertainment fronts.

HOTELS
January 2008 marked the debut of The Palazzo, the newest resort by Las Vegas Sands Corp. The $1.8 billion property features more than 3,000 all-suite rooms and offers shopping, dining, and entertainment on two levels. Also now open is Palms Place Condo Hotel and Spa, which houses 599 condominium suites, a 50,000-square-foot pool and spa enclave, and SkyTube, a moving walkway that will join the residences with the Palm's casino, restaurants, and nightlife venues.

Set to open this month is The Trump International Hotel and Tower. Rising 64 stories, the building will house 1,232 suites and 50 penthouse suites; a spa, salon, and fitness center; gourmet dining at DJT Restaurant and Bar; a pool with private cabanas; indoor meeting space; and a business center. Aliante Station, the latest resort project by Station Casinos and Greenspun Corporation, topped off the concrete structure of its hotel tower in November 2007. Expected to open late this year, it will feature 200 hotel rooms; a full array of gaming offerings; six restaurants; a 16-screen Regal Cinemas movie theater; a 700-seat entertainment showroom; and meeting and convention space.

Approximately 10 miles to the south of the Strip, M Resort is slated for a spring 2009 opening. The $1 billion property will include 360 rooms and suites and 40,000 square feet of meeting space. Fall 2009 is the anticipated debut date for the Fontainebleau Las Vegas, a $2.9 billion resort and condominium hotel with nearly 4,000 rooms, a 60,000-square-foot spa, a 3,200-seat performing arts theater, signature restaurants, and top-tier retail stores. Late 2009 will bring the completion of The Cosmopolitan Resort and Casino, boasting 2,998 luxury hotel rooms, suites, penthouses and condo units; 140,000 square feet of convention and meeting space; an 80,000-square-foot casino, 265,000 square feet of shopping and dining; a multipurpose theater; a spa, salon, and fitness center; a nightclub; and a five-acre outdoor facility with a sandy beach pool and private cabanas.

On the renovation and expansion front, a $95 million renovation and expansion now under way at the South Point Hotel Casino and Spa will add a third tower with an additional 800 guest rooms and suites, as well as another 10,000 square feet of conference space. Two new restaurants with a connecting bar, as well as two new casino bars, have already opened. Station Casinos' Green Valley Ranch, Resort, Spa and Casino has added a new restaurant, Terra Verde, to its dining lineup, as well as remodeled its Drop Bar. Plans call for an upcoming remodel of guest rooms in the property's original tower, which opened in December 2001.

Luxor has announced a multiphase enhancement plan, the first stage of which involves improvements to its casino level scheduled this year. Phase 2, also slated to begin in 2008, encompasses changes to the property's signature atrium and galleria areas, including new shops, a re-branded coffee shop, and a new buffet. The third phase will focus on room remodeling and is planned to begin in 2009. Encore, the second tower of Wynn Las Vegas, is under construction with completion expected in December 2008. The $1.4 billion hotel and casino will house approximately 2,000 rooms.

Meanwhile, MGM Mirage is preparing for the 2009 debut of CityCenter, a 76-acre "urban metropolis" which, in addition to several condominium residences, will boast a 61-story, 4,000-room resort casino with a 1,850-seat showroom theater, a spa, a fitness center, a salon, and four large pools. Eighteen restaurants will serve a diverse range of cuisines and six bars and lounges, as well as a nightclub, will provide added entertainment.

Harrah's Entertainment, too, has jumped on the expansion and renovation bandwagon with a $1 billion expansion of Caesars Palace slated to wrap-up in early 2009. The centerpiece of the expansion will be the 665-room Octavius Tower, to be situated adjacent to a new 263,000-square-foot meeting and convention center. The resort's existing 512-room Forum Tower will undergo a major refurbishment.

Finally, Silverton Casino Lodge has begun a $130 million expansion project expected to be completed by early 2009. The resort will increase its public space by 35,000 square feet and add 800 slot machines, a high-limit gaming salon, a race and sports book, a poker lounge, and more.

While Las Vegas continues to see the opening of new gaming resorts, one new property - The Platinum Hotel and Spa - is catering to increased demand for non-gaming accommodations options in the city. Featuring 300 one- and two-bedroom suites and more than 10,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, The Platinum is the only non-gaming, non-smoking boutique hotel in Las Vegas, located one block off the Strip at Flamingo and Koval.

DINING
In the fall of 2007, Las Vegas became only the fourth U.S. city to be profiled by the authors of the Michelin Guide, the prestigious restaurant and lodging guidebook. Joël Robuchon at MGM Grand received top honors with the coveted three-star rating. Earlier in 2007, AAA awarded four restaurants its prestigious Five Diamond Award: Alex at Wynn Las Vegas, Joël Robuchon at MGM Grand, and Le Cirque and Picasso at Bellagio. Both Alex at Wynn Las Vegas and Joël Robuchon at MGM Grand have recently been honored with Five-Star ratings by Mobil Travel Guide.

Dining developments continue. Notably, The Palazzo is the home of the seventh and largest outpost of famed sushi emporium SUSHISAMBA, as well as of Mexican cuisine mecca Dos Caminos Las Vegas. Laurent Turondel's BLT Burger opens at The Mirage this spring, and famed elegant Italian trattoria AGO just launched a new Vegas location at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino this winter. The Light Group will unveil its latest restaurant concept with the April opening of BRAND Steakhouse at Monte Carlo Resort & Casino. In other steakhouse news, Morels French Steakhouse & Bistro has opened at The Palazzo. The establishment merges steak with other unique culinary aspects, including an iced seafood bar and a cheese and charcuterie bar.

Elsewhere in the city, McFadden's Restaurant and Saloon recently made its debut at The Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. Already famous in such cities as New York, Boston, Chicago, and Philadelphia, McFadden's Las Vegas outpost boasts two rooms (including a 150-person private party room with its own island bar), more than 20 high-definition plasma TVs, and a dance floor. The Springs Cafe by Wolfgang Puck is the latest "green" addition to the Las Vegas Springs Preserve. The 6,800-square-foot café showcases organic ingredients from regional artisan producers and growers, and complements the preserve's commitment to sustainable living.

LIVE ENTERTAINMENT
"
The Showgirl Must Go On" is the title of charismatic Bette Midler's Las Vegas production, created exclusively for The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. It features some of Midler's favorite colorful characters, a 13-piece band, and 20 female dancers.

"Hats! A Music and Comedy Celebration," is on the marquee at Harrah's Las Vegas and is the story of a 49.999-year-old woman who reluctantly faces the "Big Five-0" until she meets several remarkable women who show her fun, friendship, and the lighter side of maturity.

"Jersey Boys," the Tony Award-winning musical, will open in a custom-built, 1,600-seat theater at Palazzo Resort Hotel Casino on May 3, 2008. The story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, the show features such hits as "Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You," and "Oh, What a Night."

Cirque du Soleil and Luxor have announced a new show featuring renowned illusionist Criss Angel. The show is scheduled to open at Luxor in the summer of 2008. Cirque du Soleil and Criss Angel will work together to fuse revolutionary illusions and mystical artistry with acrobatics, dance, puppetry, music, and poetry in an effort to reinvent the traditional magic show.

"MAMMA MIA!," the hit musical based on the songs of recording group ABBA, has extended a record-breaking run at the Mandalay Bay Theatre through Jan. 4, 2009. Inspired by the story-telling magic of songs by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus' songs, writer Catherine Johnson's funny tale of family and friendship unfolds on a Greek island.

GES Exposition Services

GES' Acquires Ethnometrics to Provide Industry-Leading, Value-Added Exhibition, And Event Consultation

GES Exposition Services has long been committed to formulating strategic partnerships that offer proactive guidance to its clients, as well as enable exhibitors to glean maximum benefits from the exhibition experience. Taking this commitment to new levels, the company recently acquired the business of Ethnometrics Inc., a leading consulting firm focused on the retail and exhibition industries.

Ethnometrics Inc. provides exhibitors, show organizers, and retailers an independent, data-driven approach to improving ROI. To accomplish this mission, the company utilizes six-sigma techniques to analyze a variety of facets of attendee behavior, including traffic patterns over the course of the event, use of common areas, and the level of engagement with exhibitor and booth staff. The objective: to increase exhibitors' "in booth" sales effectiveness and ensure that show organizers enjoy an improved show experience.

"We provide the factual basis for show organizers to make critical decisions and, in turn, improve their shows," said Ethnometrics' founder and vice president Martin Smith. These facts are based on:

  • Traffic measurement - specifically, how many attendees are present and where they go
  • Timing analysis - the amount of time attendees remain in areas such as pavilions and booths, and how much time they spend engaging with the booth and staff
  • Tracking analysis - what individual attendees do, where they go, and how they "consume" the event. Demographic breakdowns can include attendee age, race, ethnicity, buying characteristics, job title, company, profession, and more.
  • Efficiency analysis - clients' efficiency in attracting and engaging their target audience, interacting face to face with attendees, moving attendees through a purchase and/or decision process, delivering ROI, and capitalizing on lifetime value.

With Ethnometrics in their corner, clients also enjoy a unique approach to training, with actual video evidence provided to support the company's claims of design and behavior issues.

According to Kevin Rabbitt, GES' president and CEO, the acquisition of Ethnometrics Inc. goes far beyond strengthening GES' commitment to its strategic partnerships. "Ethnometrics has revolutionized measurement and performance metrics for the exhibition industry, and we are very happy to add its capabilities to our existing line of value-added products and services," Rabbitt concluded. "Together, the two companies will transform the data and analysis from exhibitions into executable changes on the show floor."

Las Vegas Meetings by Harrah's Entertainment

Break Out of the Ballroom

The merger of Harrah's Entertainment and Caesars Entertainment in 2005, and the subsequent launch of Las Vegas Meetings by Harrah's Entertainment, created a revolutionary new opportunity for meeting planners. With distinct properties such as Bally's Las Vegas, Caesars Palace, Flamingo Las Vegas, Harrah's Las Vegas, Imperial Palace, Paris Las Vegas, and Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, the new Las Vegas Meetings by Harrah's Entertainment structure made it possible for planners to book their choice of meeting rooms and ballrooms at any or all of the company's seven Las Vegas properties with the convenience of one contact, one contract, and one food and beverage minimum. This allowed planners to enjoy a new level of flexibility and simplicity in offering their attendees a diverse Las Vegas experience. Now, the paradigm has shifted even further with the introduction of a one-of-a-kind "alternative venues" option.

In addition to "mixing and matching" function space, planners can now choose from more than 120 alternative venues (such as restaurants, lounges, and night clubs) for their events across any and all Las Vegas Meetings by Harrah's Entertainment properties, and apply a portion of their spending to their food and beverage minimum. And of course, planners will still enjoy the ease of a single contact, contract, and minimum. This lack of restriction is unparalleled in and out of the Las Vegas market, and gives event organizers of all types true freedom of choice to leverage their spending at an extensive variety of venues.

"Before, we said, 'You can have your guest rooms at Flamingo, your opening reception in the Skyview Ballroom at Bally's, your lunch in the Champagne Ballroom at Paris, and your closing reception in the Augustus Ballroom at Caesars," noted Michael Massari, vice president of meeting sales and operations for Las Vegas Meetings by Harrah's Entertainment. "Now we're saying, 'We don't care where you meet. You can have your opening reception at VooDoo Lounge at Rio, your lunch at Mon Ami Gabi at Paris, and your closing party at PURE at Caesars Palace, and your spending will still help you achieve your food and beverage minimum.'"

For Las Vegas Meetings by Harrah's Entertainment, it's all par for the course. "Our goal has always been to listen to our customers, respond to their needs, and make it easier for them to achieve their objectives and execute a successful meeting," Massari said. "This new program is another option for planners to that end. And when they are successful, so are we."
